Suggestions For A Light Oil Ball
« on: July 14, 2009, 06:31:40 AM »
I need some help in picking a light oil ball and what drilling to put on it.  The last 2 weeks in league I have struggled because of not having one, due to the oil being much lighter than I'm used to, and the 3 balls I typically use are now too strong and hook way too early on light oil, forcing me further left than I'm comfortable with.  I have a Mean Machine, Diesel Particle, and a Mutant, all drilled pin down at about 3 3/8 to 4" from my PAP (4 1/2 over and 1/4 up), all at 600-1000 grit sheen, and I throw about 14mph (at the pin deck) on synthetic lanes.

What would be a good ball choice and what kind of layout might be best for me?

I bought a used C300 Wrath Dead Flush off ebay, for med-oil, but it had same span so I never redrilled.  It was drilled pin below bridge, stacked.  What I got was a perfect low-oil ball for me.  I throw low revs and this layout creates a very long roll with hard turn to pocket.  Probably the one ball I'll wait to replace.  They are always up for sale on here & not too expensive.

You might also look at the new Columbia 300 Freeze.  The Messenger core with Momentum's cover.  The ball sells for cheap too!

I typically go with my Global 900 Link with a 45 axis drilling and polish, it goes long but has a smooth back end, other than the Link, the Roto Grip Neptune is another really good light oil ball.

Just to throw out another option, I recently redrilled my old Ebnoite Clear Wolf, thats a perfect ball for light oil to burnt conditions but they dont make it any more.

Only throw the good stuff, Roto/Global.

As a high rev, high speed, 2 handed bowler, I've resorted to pretty much all alternatives when it comes to dry lanes.  I believe I have finally found a great ball that gives me a consistent read and pin carry on dry lanes.  The 505C by Track has been the missing link in my arsenal.  It gives you a solid read to the pocket with enough power to hit strong.  I have mine drilled with the pin in the ring finger which gives me a smooth roll throughout the lane. Definitely highly recommended!
