Looking for views on sport bowling
« on: May 16, 2005, 07:55:47 PM »
Since the movement to sport bowling over the past few years, I'm curious to know what people think of these types of shots in league and tournament play. Do you believe that sport bowling truly improves your average/scores in typical house shot play, either leagues or tournaments? Do you prefer a sport shot league that sticks to one or two types of patterns for the duration of the league, or do you feel it's better to vary patterns every 3 to 4 weeks to become more versatile to the changing conditions? Have you found particular layouts and/or types of equipment that seem to work better on sport shots?

I know I'm asking a lot of questions- I'm just gearing myself up for my first sport shot summer league this coming Thursday, and I can't wait to see how I do this summer.

Hi Matt,

I have the luck to have 2 houses around here which take bowling seriously - and apply a difficult/demanding sports pattern (40-42' medium/heavy oil, NO walls; and a 40'crown pattern). But this is rare, I guess.

I like playing on this turf. It is really demanding, and sometimes frustrating. But you learn to be exact, because there are no walls to cover release flaws and mistakes, nor light oil which makes any dude's reactive ball hook like crazy.

Yes, my average on a THS is 30 pins higher than on this sports turf, but I like it. When I play well on sports patterns, it is very rewarding because I can directly see and "feel" what I made wrong, even though the results are not convincing at the firts glance. But whenever I get back to the THS house I see how good and controlled I really am. Play well on sport, be better anywhere else. It's like an investment in skill and patience.

Changing patterns can be a challenge, too, but I think only experienced players who know their equipment, their ability to adopt and the knowkledge to read the lanes can cope with this. For a hobby player frequently changing oil patterns can result in an equipment lottery - whoever is lucky to have the right ball at hand will play well, while the rest struggles. O.K., can be a challenge, too, but absolotely NOT knowing what to expect before a tournament does not make for good sport, IMHO. I guess putting on a new an demanding pattern is enough for "normal" bowlers for the next 3-6 months?

Be lucky if you have the opportunity to play on such a pattern. See it as a challenge, because it takes some time to get used to reduced ball recation and the fact that YOUR mistakes are more obvious than on a THS. Enjoy it! And do not get fed up by low results...

Fun, challenging and sometimes stressful, always interesting.

Don't expect dry, don't expect oil. If they vary the shot, you'll get a little of both.

Oh, and throw straight balls at spares.

This is probably the most important key to sport bowling. I'll take it one step further - throw PLASTIC straight at spares.

I love the challenge of sport bowling - and I don't score well on the shots. But that's ok - $20 a week in league fees is cheaper than a coach, with more precise feedback EVERY shot.

I wish people around here had enough Sac to keep a sport league running.  All of them in this area that I knew of folded due to lack of interest.  I didn't get to participate because we had just moved - when I asked, all the owners said the same thing "We tried it, but people dropped out halfway through and now we can't get enough people interested to try it again."

With the exception of this one summer league I found, all I get is THS...

I take exception to this comment depending on your definition of snappy, as some of the best sets on sport shots that I've bowled have been shot with snappy equipment. Saw blade, Flash point, and hit are a few that come to mind immediately.

A sport shot is just about finding the right part of the lane to play (usually way outside on shorter patterns, in on medium length, and wherever the ball will move on extremely long pattern) and whatever ball works on that part of the lane, go ahead and use it. You will leave just as many splits with snappy equipment as early rolling stuff on sport patterns, its all about trying to find the line to the pocket that gives you 3 or 4 strikes a game and leaves you with easy spares. Oh, and don't forget the luck! I see more brooklyns on sport shots than almost every session of league the rest of the year combined.

Thanks for all the comments and advice to this thread so far. I wanted to mention that last year this particular league had 12 teams of trios, and I believe this summer there will be more. Our normal Monday night team has been able to put in two trios for this league and I'm ready for the challenge. Since this house is 45-50 minutes away I'll be bringing a variety of equipment and seeing what works and what doesn't (most of my equipment isn't skid/snap, but I do have a piece or two like that).

And I'm a proponent of using a spare ball at 95% of my spares, no matter if the shot is a THS, flood, sport shot, or anything in between.

Keep the thread flowing.
