Going to try summer league
« on: April 27, 2011, 01:04:59 AM »
Haven't been on a league since my sroke about 3 yrs ago.  Tried subbing for one of my old teams during the winter.  Wasn't a very pleasant experience.  My average is down about 50 pins.  Guys were accusing me of sandbagging.  Couple were really irate.

Hopefully this experience will turn out better.  On the down side, while I was laid up every ball I owned cracked except for my Global 900 S75.  Not sure if I want to go to the expense of replacing the arsenal or not.

Sr!  Good to see a post again.  Are you coming to the Gathering this year?

Don't worry so much about what others say. You aren't bowling to please them, you're bowling for yourself and the personal satisfaction you get from it.

I've been a 200avg bowlers since the late 1980's, but have just recently broken my right arm and elbow, which required a surgical fix with plates, screws, and pins. The therapist hasn't ruled out eventually bowling with it again, but has told me it will never reach 100%. If I do, I am going to have to start with a lighter ball and will have a much weaker release than before.

If I can't perform well enough to suit myself, it will be up to me to either find a way to compete, or give it up and move on, but I would NOT let a bunch of self centered others make that decision for me.

Something I'm going to do is try a purely recreational league first. Theres a lot less emphasis on scores and a lot more on learning and having fun while trying to develop my game. Seems to me that THAT atmosphere will be much more condusive to me getting back into the swing of things IF I can.

Good luck Sr., and good to see you wanting/trying to get back into the sport.

I'm going through something similar as both of you......I'm bowling this summer in a league for the first time since I had my first blood clot five years ago. Should be interesting to say the least.

Sr Kegler,

Not sure if you remember me from the "olden days."  So sorry to hear of your stroke.  I had one 1.5 years ago.  It wasn't too severe (affecting mainly speech), and I kept bowling, losing only ten pins off my average.

Just wanted to wish you all the best.

Debbie

Thanks for all the kind words.  Yep I remember you Debs.  One redeming factor is this league is 1000 miles from my usualy stomping grounds.  Going to be bowling in Deland, Fl.  Only about 20 miles from the house but after being in all the alleys in the area, this was the only one that asked me to join a league.

Like some of the others, I'm dropping to 14#.  Should give me a little more control.  It starts Monday nite and is a mixure of all ages but mainly just a fun league.

My stroke only affected my left side slightly.  Wouldn't have been so bad if it was my arm that I don't use all that much , but problem is in my leg.  Balance problems.

SrKegler,

Bowl and enjoy yourself, what others say is unimportant. I for one think people take the game way too seriously, when what is important is the joy that the game gives you. Best of luck in your summer league,I hope you bowl well.

Great to see you coming back .. good luck .. I'd help you out with a ball but the three NIB I have are 16 pounds. If you think you can handle one .. it's yours!
