Ball choice for Rico drilling
« on: January 19, 2009, 12:33:07 AM »
I understand the layout and intent of the rico drill.  I also realize that it is a layout for more tournament type conditions that are a little flatter with longer volumes of oil.  My question is:  is there a certain type of ball that responds better to this type of drilling compared to others?

For instance:  will a symetrical ball be better than an asymetrical?  should it be an aggressive coverstock or would a pearl work better?  should the coverstock be dulled or polished?  any ball company have a better reaction with this drill that others?

This is a layout I have been contemplating but would like a little more information before making a decision of what type of ball to get to try this drilling out on.

Thank you for your help.

Scott

In my opinion the ball needs to have a very low RG rating.  The purpose of the layout is to lower the RG of the core by the placement of the holes, thus using a ball like a Gamebreaker, Original Inferno, or a Momentum Swing.

It can be used on any ball...but to me the layout is at it's best on balls that are most influenced by weight holes and the lowering of the RG rating.

I've used this layout on several balls now...both sym and asym cores.
I cannot say it works better on one over the other. I have not yet used it on a ball and not liked the reaction. That said, I have not used this layout on a dull oiler. It should work just fine on an oiler too, so long as there is enough oil.

Here is a list of my rico'd balls...I am very happy with all of them.

Break (lightly polished)
Break Pearl
Creature (lightly polished)
Creature Pearl
Complete NV

I'm using it on an Emerald Vibe right now, and I love it. The Rico gives a nice, predictable roll, and very smooth and even. I've had a couple balls with it, but can't say wether asym. or symetrical would be best though from that point.

I put the Rico drilling on a Flash Force---so it doesnt need to be strong. The Flash Force has been a godsend since putting that drill on it. Its wonderful. Paid off in doubles at Nationals (wasnt strong enough for team or my singles pair). But I had a look that people would die for in doubles last year.

My current experience goes against this. The one ball I tried with a Rico, the Zone Classic, has a very low RG. Between the very low pin and the high AND early flare of the drilling, I can't get this ball thru the heads on my relatively light oil conditions in 3 houses, with enough retained energy. I was/am trying a rico for the first time and I had never used a ZC before, so I had no idea how the basic ball would react for my release and the conditions I bowl on - a major mistake on my part.

I would suggest only putting a Rico on a ball you're familiar with, no matter the RG. Some low RG balls clear the heads veyr easily and other high RG balls are much earlier. It depends on the basic ball reaction FOR YOU, not some absolute, as near as I can determine. The drilling makes the ball earlier and much smoother. What ball do you have that needs this CHANGE in character?

I put the Rico drill in an Equation, a flippy ball by nature. I had a tough time carrying in a local house, was never able to square up the pocket and carry consistently.

My carry percentage went way up because the Rico drill read the midlane better and tamed the backend reaction without losing any power at the pins.

I played around with the drilling in a Heist and it made an even rolling ball even more even. Was really good on tougher, flatter conditions, but did not see much success on house shots.
