Okay, after a disappointing showing at Nationals and in recent tourneys, I decided to change some stuff in my game.
Change 1:
I take 5 steps, but I've always started from the forward row of dots. I have lots of problems with getting to the line early and muscling the ball thru the release. So, I moved back about 2/3rds of the way to the back row of dots. That made it much easier to arrive at the line in sync.
Change 2:
Grip change. Over the past 4/5 years, I continue to relax my grip hoping to gain a more relaxed feel and less grabbing. I was a touch over 5" in span back in 99/00. Today, we went from 4 7/16ths to 4 1/8, putting the finger holes about centered between the knuckles on my fingers. The thumb pitch went from 0 and 1/16th palm, to 1/4 forward. In addition, we started with a pilot hole and custom ovaling(by hand) to help the feel in the thumb. Luckily, a friend gave me a couple of older balls to use as his span was close to 4 1/8, we were able to slug the thumb and go from there. Also, one of those balls has a pinky hole. Now, I've never used one, but it actually feels pretty good.
So, to the lanes. No Mercy drilled pin above bridge, mb about 1" right of thumb. Raging red fuze, pin above ring, stacked. After trying 1/2 forwad for one game, we dropped it back to 1/4. I used the fuze and shot 257, 233 and 277. I had more room than I've EVER had on our THS. It was amazing, no grabbing, just everything going forward at the release. I ended shooting 4 games plus another 2/3 in practice shots afterward. I want to give this 20 games or so, but I'll probably end up going to this in all my equipment. The hard part will be deciding what to keep and what to replace.
