Grip question
« on: October 03, 2009, 05:24:35 PM »
Hello all,

I have finally started league regularly again but am starting to have a problem.  I have a finger injury that is about 3 years old.  It flares up more so than used to and it seems I'm going to have to make a change.  It is the first joint of my middle finger.  I know we can play around with pitches and might get lucky, but I was wandering about shortening my span to a semi fingertip on the middle finger.  Has anyone tried this and if so how did it go?

Our feet may swiftly carry out Thy commands.
So we shall flow a river forth to Thee
And teeming with souls shall it ever be.

Not sure what your idea of a "semi fingertip" is but joint pain is a sure sign of your span being too long. put your thumb all the way in the ball and comfortably lay your hand across the ball. If the edge of the grip is past halfway between the two creases in your finger than its probably too long.

Pain in the first finger joint (closest to the fingernail) can also be caused by insufficient reverse pitch for the flexibility of the joint.  A good fitter will check your joint flexibility and give you the correct pitch.  --  JohnP

I would check the span-on both fingers, not just the middle. If the span is too long, pitches will have little or no effect, more like a band aid that fixing the problem.
A correct span dictates pitches...

JustRico -- True, spans are critical.  But in dealing with my customers using balls drilled by someone else, I've found that most of the time their spans are correct.  But I've had quite a few that have stiff joints, that I would use 1/2 - 3/4 reverse on, that are throwing balls with forward pitch.  And even with the correct spans finger joint pain results.  I am an example of this.  Before I learned to fit and drill my finger holes were drilled at 1/4 forward pitch.  My ring finger joint hurt every time I bowled.  After learning to fit and checking my own joint flexibility, I changed that to 3/4 reverse and no more pain.  Also, no loss of revs.  --  JohnP

Hello again and thanks for the replies.  I am more than sure that my span is not off.  We just corrected my span on almost all of my bowling balls.  I think I am going to try the pitch change.  I bowled tonight without any pain but again this finger injury flares up from time to time.  Still gonna go with the pitch change so mabye the flareups wont be so often.  Again thanks for the replies
