Why not?  You don't have to be a good bowler to have bowling ball knowledge.

From past experience, I have known several pro shop guys that were just average bowlers, but understood the dynamics of bowling balls and how to drill them to fit the cusomter's needs.  On the other hand, I have seen pro shop guys who carry a PBA card and average 220 or more that do not have a clue about how to fit and drill.  And yet I here bowlers who go to these PBA guys because "these guys are pros and good bowlers, therefore they must know what they are doing".

I think someone who is a below average bowler can drill well. Whether they know what they are doing or not, what drives me crazy is when you go to a shop ask for a certain thing and get something totally different. When I have something in mind with a ball and I get the old that won't work argument then they do there own thing and the ball sucks I want to pull my hair out. The better bowlers around here are hit or miss drillers though. The ball will be either real sweet or just suck from my experience.

Don't matter to me how good he is at bowling it is about how good he is at fitting, drilling, and finding solutions to my problems

The same can be said about Golf coaches.   In comparison, yes most golf coaches are good, but they are not PGA good, yet they coach PGA guys.

Most Proshop guys, I've known, are above average bowlers, because they've been bowling longer than they've been drilling.   And they got into drilling as a hobby or as a side job.

What do good drillers and coaches have in common?  The ability to communicate.
