Grips vs. no grips
« on: February 20, 2005, 10:22:03 AM »
Just got a question, I'm thinking of going with no grips on my balls, so I would like to know what difference is the when u have grips or no grips (still only finger tips)
Pros, cons, anything

Thanx

Well pretty much the difference is that you can get out cleaner.  Some people lose revs since they need the inserts to have grip, but others like me, gain revs from being able to have a nice, clean release.  It's worth a try.  Don't do it to all your stuff.  Try one ball for a few weeks.  It takes a little getting used to, since the feel is so much different.

Your fingers hurt a lot at first, but you get used to it. You can "feel" the ball come off your hand more, and can tell if it came off correctly. You can feel pitch changes a lot more. You dont have to worry about grips coming out, or wearing out. I dont use grips, and I love it.

Forgot to mention that.  At first your fingers might feel sore, since the ball itself is much harder than the rubber inserts.  But when you get used to it, its completely fine.

LIke i said, try it out on one ball for a few weeks/months, and then make the decision.

I have tried both ways. I prefer grips because you can get better contact with a grip. Since no one has round fingers grips improve feel and contact.
Before plugging a ball try just using the round grips with no lifts ( Vise ) If you don't see any change in release or revs you probably won't see a significant difference eliminating grips.
Also try installing a grip backward it gives a consistent feel but rapid release.

NJ, keep in mind that's for you.  For me, even the non-lift grips didn't work out, and they feel much different than none.  Grips/no grips is really one of those thigns you have to try out.  No kind of grip will ever feel like no grips though.

it is a mostly a matter of preference.

in My case I am committed to not gripping the ball. if you squeeze the ball it may hurt. I also have sharp bevels. I am really committed

I also have my fingers 1/4 and 3/8ths reverse. I can feel the finger pitches better without grips.

I also like the feel of a smaller bridge. this is something you can not try out with different grips.

but you have to try it and see. if you like trying to overhook the lane and hit up on it, you may be disappointed.

I've tried both, and I'll never go without them again. I am just the opposite of you AK, I get a cleaner release with the grips than without. Its all a matter of preference really. Try both and see which you prefer. A good way to do this might even be to (if you have the funds) buy two of the same ball, drill them the same and try one with grips and one without and see which you like better. Just an idea though

I was thinking about going to no grips, but my guy told me to try vacuums first.  One of the best decisions I've made in a while.  They are soft, and they come off your hand great.

I have to go no grips. They only feel good to me for a few games and then they need changing, they might pull loose or anything. Once you get straight finger holes they way you like them they stay like that for life. What my driller does for me is he drills them one size smaller than I measure and then we bevel sand them out to size so they feel exactly the way I like them.

Oh, i forgot to mention.  a_j, if you want to try it out, don't plug it and do it to whatever you have.  Wait, until you have a new ball.  Then drill it with no grips.  Why?  This way, if you decide you hate them, your driller only has to open the holes up to put grips in.  No plugging needed, and it's like it never happened.

i have had all my gear changed to a no-grip setup. 9 balls, LOL. a_ak57 and i discussed it a while back, and its a matter of preference.

- i can get a better feel on the ball.
- the release is very clean.
- i can truly feel when i am coming out late, or early. the grips always sorta 'hang' on the finger as you exit, not giving a true impression of timing off the hand.
- holes can't wear out!
- if ya dont like 'em, open it up and stick in some Vises.

the first time i armed off a shot with my inferno, no grips... i turned to my driller and smiled. i unloaded my bag, kept one ball as a backup in case the inferno was too strong for league, and had it all plugged up & drilled without the rubbers.

my only beef is wear & tear on my fingers, specifically one in particular. my middle finger is wearing in a weird spot... the OUTSIDE edge. hmmm. we will see what she does.
