How precise is your mark?
« on: November 30, 2004, 08:58:26 AM »
Most people use the arrows as a reference, right? Well how precise is the mark you use? Meaning, do you use seperate boards, rather then arrows? For me, I just cant seem to only use a single board as my mark. 1) my eyes are horrible, and trying to focus on one board is tough 2) I just CANT DO IT! My mark is always an arrow. Would I find better lines if I learned to pick out single boards as a mark?

WEll some would say the best thing is to aim for your exact breakpoint but.......

I aim for specific boards.   Pretty close up too, close to the dots.  If i don't look at a single board (even if i miss it slightly), i will lose focus and spray it.

its not a matter of aiming for a mark.. its hitting it that counts. I aim very precisely, when i'm on i hit very precisely, most of the time, I might as well hope the oil funnles me to the pocket

If I'm bowling on a house shot, I'll focus at the arrows, and use a 1-2 board area. Sport shot, usually the dots - and one board area.
that's what I focus on - but of course, there are two points to the trajectory of the ball - where I'm looking at the arrows and/or dots, and the breakpoint. It's just easier for me to focus on the breakpoint.

When I aim for the dots, I have a tendacy to lean way too much forward as if I was trying to reach out and touch them. This causes me to pull the ball, lose leverage, etc. Even though the dots aren't that close, it seems they are when moving from the arrows back to the dots. Does anyone else have a similar problem and what is the best way to cure this?

my goal is the keep the ball on the lane! thats my mark lol

i look at the arrows too, but i also learned,(which this is very good) is to watch other guys around u and if there throwing te bal like u, lok where there ball is breaking, and try to hit that break mark with you ball.

For me, When I find a mark that works i make sure I shoot for it, I may get as precise as a half of a board or so.

I'm kinda unusual when it comes to a mark.  My eyes are on the dots right before the foul line.  Basically I'm always looking at the floor.  I focus on the 3rd dot from the right since I'm right handed.  I adjust off of that.  Different I know, but it works for me.

I don't know how accurate I am at at hitting a mark, because I focus on the break point. I started doing this about a year ago and it works better for me.
My goal is a 3 board spot at the break point and I hit is about 80% of the time, which in my opinion is good, but I struggle with keeping the same AR, AT, REV, MPH. With a focal point of 45' and 3 boards that is only 1 board at the arrows (15') but I find it easier to do.

My mark is always a spot.  The spot might be a board, or the line between two boards, or a visible imperfection in the surface.

When the heads are wet, I usually target at the arrows (15 feet).  As the heads start to dry, I move my target farther down the lane, eventually winding up around 45 feet.  My target is still a spot (even though I can't really see it too clearly at 45 feet).

Magic Carpet has a four-article series on targeting the breakpoint by drawing lines; very instructional, even if you don't wind up using it.  Start here:

Oh, my mark is very precise... my ability to hit it is a different story!  I usually start out targeting one of the arrows, and once I find the reaction I like, will fine tune by moving in our out a board at a time.  I haven't had much success targeting a breakpoint, but then, I've not practiced it enough to expect consistent results either.

Boards were easier to hit on old maple cuz of the lighter/darker boards.  Was it Heddon that had/have lanes that were lighter/darker every other one?  Thought that was a good idea.  HPL is easier than Anvilane to target IMO.

My problem as far as accuracy now isn't timing/release but ball speed.  Since, I have to roll the rock so much faster than I'd like to hold the line nowadays it makes accuracy so much harder.

Think about Earl and Ned Day the ole guys who had medium ball speed at best and you'll know why they were so accurate.  Didn't have to roll it with beaucoup speed like you do the in the so called modern age of bowling.

I can honestly say that I don't aim for certain boards, I generate way to much power on the ball to aim at a one board mark. because I have so many revs I usually have a bit more room for error compared to a stroker so. I find it easier to pick two marks on the lanes usually arrows and aim for the gap between them. I find this easier than concentrating on a single board. Hey it works for me LOL.
