Guardian Heads
« on: May 25, 2009, 01:47:39 PM »
The house i bowl ond work at is putting down guardian heads down this week. It was regular wooden lanes. How will it play different then the wooden lanes. I know they are going to have to change the shot to but besides that what else is going to change. I wont have to worry about lanes changing slower or faster because im left handed. I throw about 16 mph and with about in the middle revs not alot but enough. Thanks for all the help in advance.

Guardian lanes in a word are more "tacky" than wood or synthetic.

Guardian overlay on the heads can make for possibly the worst bowling condition you'll ever bowl on if your lane guy can't get it oiled to play consistent with the rest of the lane. It is the softest surface you will ever play on. A rep from our local bowling supply company said in reality it is so soft you ball is making contact with the lane on three sides of the ball. We had a guy who figured out the right set up and the scores were good but when he left the owner went away from that shot and has struggled ever since to put out a shot that was fair for all. It's either love it or hate it with nothing in between. Good luck. I'm a lefty who has bowled at that house for 27 years with over half on that head area surface. I finally left for good this year to bowl at a place with the entire lane being synthetic.

Another thing about guardian is, If theres a track in the wood and they don't cut down/sand the lanes properly. Before they lay down the guardian, it will have the track in it also.

I bowl in a house that Guardian up front. Carry was a little interesting from time to time, Backend was very jump really fast off the spot, also we seen carry down before the oil burned out so we moved right more often than left as a matter of fact I found myself bumping right to mellow out the backend and find more oil before I going left or changing balls.

usually gaurdian is a high friction surface, so i would adjust the covers on your equipment first. for me i usually start with 1500 to 2000 base then add polish as needed. we have a center here where im at that went full gaurdian a last year and as a matter of fact the city record was broken this year at that center, it was 858 i think. go into it with an open mind, it may not be as bad as you think.
