Is this against the rules???
« on: April 01, 2005, 12:59:06 AM »
Last night two guys were practicing together on lanes 21 and 22 of a 26 lane house when a large party came into the center and they were asked to move down to 25 - 26.  After shooting 3 games on that pair the lanes were oiled and prepared for league bowling.  It turns out that the team these 2 guys were subbing for were bowling on 25 - 26 after practicing for 10 minutes the opposing team captain told them they could not bowl because they had practiced on the pair they were subbing on.  Nobody had prior knowledge of the lane assignments for the night, is this in the rule book.

Thanks for your responses

It's not against the rules at all.

There is no USBC rule that would (to my knowledge) expressly prohibit practice on a pair prior to a league session.  An individual league, however, may choose to write such a rule into their league rules.

I've seen this happen several times in the past.  I don't know of any such rule regarding prior practice on the assigned pair of lanes.  The team captain that raised the beef was barking at the moon!

It can be a league rule..
In my Wed. night scratch league, no one ever wants to practice on their pair. They want to burn up someone else's pair, and leave theirs with the fresh shot.

We have a couple of teams that like to bowl two or three games before league starts. It seems like they always bowled on the lanes my team was supposed to be bowling on that night. The league had a meeting to address the situation. I suggested that practice bowling should be on the lanes they bowled league on. This way, as mumzie states, they could burn up their own lanes. Several of the bowlers said this was no allowed by ABC. I told them to show me the rule. No one could find it in the rulebook.

The final resolution was that the lanes are not oiled until just before league and there is no practice bowling from oiling until league starts.

There is NO ABC/USBC rule about being or not being able to bowl on the lanes on which you will league bowl that night.

A league can have it in their by-laws.

I have heard of some leagues that specify you can ONLY practice on the lanes on which you are schedlued to bowl. That way, you can only screw up your lanes. I have heard people screaming (literally) about other having practiced on the lanes on which they were scheduled to bowl. That is silly, as you can only make them worse; you can't make them better and you'll only speed up the transition!

That happens a lot on Monday nights where I am currently bowling at. We have a 5 person team league and then a doubles league. Lots of times there will be times when someone bowls on the same pair. Just luck I guess or possibly bad luck depends on how you are doing.
