Gutter ball, but a redo.......
« on: May 01, 2011, 05:26:51 PM »
Not sure what the correct rule is on this one.

Our opponents had a bowler throw a gutter ball on a double and the game was pretty tight in score at the time.  She went on to throw the ball off her ankle and went in the gutter.  She turned around, and was kind of imbarrased, but everyone saw the score, it showed a 1 for that ball.  The rack had a missing 9 pin.  I did see just before she release it and didn't say anything untill after to find out if she was ok.  It was actually brought up first by one of her teammates and both of us did agree that she should redo it.  Im thinking if it was to have happen to me, I would hope they would have enough respect to let me redo it as well.  What is the correct rule on this?  We ended up winning them all so I hope my teammates aren't too made at me.

Correct call a pin missing from the rack is a redo.  It would have been a redo if she had struck so it is the same as a gutter ball.

Was the rule change ever approved that said you had to call pin down before the ball hit the rack?  It had been discussed but I don't know if it was ever approved.

It is a dead ball.

Rule 8 - Dead Ball

When a dead ball is called, the delivery does not count and the correct pins must be respotted. The player is allowed to rebowl that delivery.

A ball shall be declared dead if any of the following occur:

a. After a delivery, attention is immediately called to the fact that one or more pins were missing from the setup.

I understand this rule and for the most part agree with the wording.

But at what time will there be some responsibility placed on each bowler to ensure his pins are correct before he throws his ball.  This might mean if it was determined a pin was missing, you would be lucky it wasn't caught.  But what if there was a penalty for not making sure all pins were present?  If you got a zero for the ball if it was determined you made a delivery without all the pins, would you check to make sure every time?  I know I am playing devil's advocate, but I hate it when someone from two lanes over has to tell someone he has pins missing because no one pays attention or even cares.  I have seen many times people through a fit because you are trying to get their attention.  Or after someone throws the ball and you tell them pin was missing, they have to get 5 others to agree because they don't want to lose their strike.

Anyway, that is a thought I have had before.

does the same go for off spot pins on the first rack, lets say you shot at a full rack where a pin was way off spot could you redo it after the fact?

I would highly doubt it....as you could call that all of the time whenever you left a greek church.  People would abuse that rule to the nth degree.
