I bowl on what i would consider a tougher house shot than most. Most house shots ive bowled on is basically get it right & ur good to go.

My main house' shot is 39ft, extreme OB outside of 6 & very little tug room. Breakpoint at 45' needs to be between 8 & 10, anything else has very little chance.

Mine varies...a lot. When everything is the way it''s "supposed" to be, it''s pretty easy, on the lighter side of medium oil with hold inside and dry outside. There''s a bit of an OB, but you''ve gotta get it way out there. Not a huge backend, but a decent move.

What we "usually" get though, is a really tight shot with very little backend and big time OB on one lane, and then it might be totally fried heads no backend, very squirty on the other lane. They''re EXTREMELY inconsistent on a daily basis, let alone on a weekly one. There''s always a new excuse too, oh the oiler is broken, or we had a batch of defective oil, or the laquer on the lane is cracked or blah blah blah.

Oh, and last I heard, it was 41'', but that may be different now, as it changes 5-6 times a year.

It''s the nights that it''s good you have to take advantage of it to have a chance at a decent average for the league.

Matt Fortney: you do realize that there is a multitude of variables that go into how the lanes play other than what program gets put down, right? At my house, we get plenty of complaints that the laneman is changing the shot up every week. Other than some very minor tweaks, it hasn't been touched all season. Yet people swear up and down that he is out to get them and screw them out of high scores.

Anyway, our house shot is 41' with pretty tame backends. You have some decent room to the outside and inside, though you will want your breakpoint around 5-7. Carry isn't so hot. We speculate it is the pins we got this year, as there was a noticeable difference in carry this year. Really it isn't so tough, but the whiners are definitely in the majority and expect to effortlessly average 220 without practice.

Neat topic, I like it.

My THS is 40 feet I believe. We have an out of bounds outside of 5, where I will perpetually leave 2-8 combinations. There's a good amount of tug room though, so missing left isn't such a bad thing. The pattern is very blended front to back too, as speed variations don't affect ball motion much here.

Wow, i would literally smack someone to get your type of OB on my house shot. The OB we face will make u punch the 10 pin in the face if u miss outside of 5, & thats if ur lucky & the ball doesnt go in the ditch. I do suspect that a big part of the problem is the topography of the lanes. I still contend that both sides, outside of 5, dip towards the channel.

I bowl in 2 houses.

1st house is my wednesday night mens leauge. Current high average is at 209 with me in 3rd at 205. The shot is 41' christmas tree medium oil. 5 board to gutter very light oil. It can be hard to throw the ball in the channel as long as there's some kind of rotation on the ball. It's not a super easy shot but not all that hard. 2 honor scores so far this year with 2 weeks left. High series of 727 and high game of 299 x2. Same pair of lanes, same game, on the same team.

2nd house is my every other sunday night mixed couples leauge. This years house shot is somewhat hard. 38' christmas tree medium heavy. Anything outside of 5 board on either side is a gauranteed missed pocket. It's not uncommon to take out the 6-9-10 when you miss your target right and get the ball out to the 5 board. High average is at 212. High game 289. High series 765. My average there is 204.

buffto: yeah I do understand that. and i'm not saying that anyone is out to get us at all. they've made a ton of changes though this season trying to combat the overall poor surface they've got. One week it's that they break down too quickly so they put out longer or more oil overall...next week they don't hook enough. it's pretty much they're trying to please everyone too much, instead of pretty much saying deal with it and leaving it be.

I'm not complaining, although re-reading that it did sound like i was. I'm just saying that it is very inconsistent. partly due to the common variables, partly due to the shot or oil type or oil brand or stripping technique changing. Personally, i'd rather they throw something down and say there it is deal with it, rather than trying to please everyone, because that will never happen.

What UI consider THS around here is in teh 37-39' length range, about 20ml total oil volume. Oil is mostly concentrated between 10th and 30th board, in a kind of fat oil tongue in the middle. Outside of this, boards are only buffed. Looks so promising when you start on a fresh lane, but the buffer zone quickly deteriorates...

My house sold 3 weeks ago. Until that time our THS was nonexistent. 4 times this season (Wed. nite only), the laneboy did not check the oil tank on the machine so along with the famous Hudson bugsprayer initial strip, from 10 to 10 was double stripped with no conditioner applied. Sometimes is a reverse block with varing degrees of OOB, & sometimes a soft wall. Only a few times this year we had a "normal" stand left & throw right.
