I think it all depends on the individual and their situation. Had a co-worker last year get a hip replacement, and they were back at work the next day walking with crutches. They overdid it, and had to work from home for several days after that but then were back to their normal in-office work schedule after about a week.
Someone I bowled with had their hip replaced. Took several months off and didn't do any of the physical therapy (they said they didn't get the hip replaced just to have to then go through physical therapy), came back as a sub a couple of times, but then never returned to bowling after that. They stop by to visit during league once in a while, but no longer bowl.
