altering surface before competition

hey guys,,, i think this has been covered before,but couldn't locate an answer

The USBC rule reads that you cant alter the surface after the 1st ball in competition 

Is that the 1st ball in practice  or 1st ball thrown in the 1st frame for score

The start of competition is defined as the point the first ball is thrown by any participant for score. Since the tournament is conducting singles and doubles concurrently, you cannot alter the surface of the bowling ball (including sanding) between events.

 


 

I assume this was for the open competition.

 True, unless the tournament rules specify differently such as the USBC Nationals.  There you cannot change the ball surface (sanding or polish) after you go through checkin.
