Hammer Raw Anger too much for me...what next?
« on: May 07, 2008, 12:06:03 AM »
Hey guys. I bought my first bowling ball about 4 months back, it was a Hammer Raw Anger. It hooked too much for my bowling style though, and I couldn't bowl in a way where I could get it in the pocket, the best I could do was brooklyn, and even then I was throwing it faster than I would like. I tried lots of different bowling styles but I just couldn't get the sucker in the pocket. So, it wasn't the right ball for me. Given that the Hammer hooked a bit too much for me, and I was getting brooklyns with it pretty often: what ball should I try next? There are so many out there. Just need one where I can consistently hit the pocket. I'm a medium speed bowler, don't want to have to bowl at high or low speed. Can be any brand. Let me know if you need any other information, thanks.

Did you try polishing it or try a doom

I did try polishing, it still hooked too much. Doom is a kind of bowling ball I'm guessing?

edit: I looked up the Hammer Doom and it looks like it might be right for me, thanks for the recommendation.

The doom is still a pretty strong ball.  It is very much like the anger, except that the doom has a pearlized cover.

Pearlized balls tend to skid further and hook later than non-pearlized balls, but can still be strong and quite hooky.

Before you buy another ball, go to the lanes on a league night and find someone similar in style and speed to you that is having success.  Talk to them about what ball they are using.  You may want to do this with several people, if you can find them.

Another step down from the doom is the cherry vibe ( also from the hammer lineup ).  It is by no means a piece of junk, rather, it is a very good ball, just not as strong as the anger or the doom.

Thanks for the info, Juggernaut.

According to bowlingball.com the "perfect scale" (which is a 1 to 300 scale on hook potential) of the doom is 60 points less than the anger. Though I'm not actually sure how much difference that is.

Buying the Anger and having it drilled cost me a pretty good amount of cash sadly...at least It gave me a better idea of what kind of ball I want.

Try taking it to 4000 grit and then add polish to it.

Instead of going out and buying a new ball to stop going BROOK, try moving your feet to the left if you are right handed a couple boards and shoot the same mark on the lane. If you have already tried this, then maybe adding a little polish would help to get the ball to go longer before it breaks. That might be what you need to do first before buying a new ball.
