hand behind the ball...
« on: August 09, 2005, 11:18:48 PM »
so are there any tips or excercises to keep the hand behind at all times? this has been a consistent problem for me...there will be long stretches when i am able to do it, but eventually, my bad habit of turning the ball when its still in my hand comes back to haunt me. thus my thumb and fingers exit at the same time and the ball just slides all the way to the pin deck. i do wear a wrist support and to be honest, i dont know how to bowl without one. as i read in a previous post that we become too dependent on them. please help me out. thanks.

I have the same problem. The first reason is that i haven´t learn to do it. The second reason is that my ball is to heavy.
But if you stand at the foul line and just try to feel how it fells to have the hand behind the ball.
If you can´t do it, try a ball thats 1 pound lighter than yours.

This is something similar I key on, only the index finger instead of the ring finger.  I just have a better 'feel' for my index finger.  I concentrate on keeping that pointed straight ahead throughout my deliver, and has helped make my stroke much more consistent.  I used to have problems dropping the ball, even with a wrist support, but this has helped immensely.

thanks a lot for the advice. i can tell you that i know how it feels to keep it behind, as i have said, but sometimes it just comes back all of a sudden without warning. just last night at our league. on the second game it just came out of nowhwere, the ball was improperly relased during the first frame and my game went downhill from there. everything felt wrong as the game progressed. the timing, the swing all went bad, even had a gutter frame. i just cant understand why i couldnt make the nescessary corrections. eventually shot a poor 101. quite frustrating really as i have made tremendous improvements this season, then this happens... and isnt muscle memory suppose to take over, i mean i know i have been doing it right for quite sometime now, so i suppose that my muscle memory should take over and it should feel natural, and would be able to duplicate how the right relase should be. or was it really just an off night and that i should forget about it and not to worry to much. but i am certain when i go and practice this saturday everything would be ok. as if i dont have release issues. but what scares me is the thought that i know it will happen again just like last night and i fear that i may may not totally eliminate this demon from creeping back into my game.
