Can anyone please explain the effects of staying behind the ball as opposed to a side release? Are you getting more revs? Better backend reaction ?

Actually it affects axis rotation, not (necessarily) tilt. Straight behind the ball is 0 degrees of rotation (think Walter Ray) and up the side is 90 degrees of rotation (think Pete).
