Hand protection?
« on: October 31, 2004, 11:43:53 PM »
Hey everyone,

I've decided to go back to my bread-and-butter hand position, behind the ball with my index finger spread wide and my pinky tucked. Their is a problem, however, this hand position causes me some moderate discomfort in my pinky and in the pad of my index. I've worn an Ebonite glove from time to time, and that seems to help the pad situation, but the pinky still hurts from resting on the ball. Does anyone experience such a thing, and, if so, do you have any suggestions as to how to alleviate this problem? Basically, I'm looking for some way to wrap my pinky so as to add padding and take this pain away. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You can goto drug store and find what I term a "finger condom" or what I believe is called a "finger cot". Basically a small short balloon that covers the finger. I have used this for both on index and pinky finger. It is thin but is very tacky. This might help.

I'll have to try the finger condom. I not only have a callous already, I seem to have a bone spur off the middle knuckle. I'm not worried about the friction on the pinky, I need padding.

Gene,

have you tried using some of Vise's or Turbo's tape on that area of your pinky? If you go around it a few times there should be decent padding if you are using the thicker tape.

I have thought about using the tape, but if you wrap tape around it, wont you not be able to bend it under?

Ex,

I have used that stuff on my thumb, but I never really thought to try it on my pinky because, as bowlingkid stated, I didn't think I'd be able to bend my pinky. But now that I think about it, if I wrap it loose enough I should be able to work something out. I'll have to give that a try.

I do not tuck my pinky much any longer, but the tape that worked best for me was the Turbo black with the black (?rubber) dots. The tape itself is pretty thin, but the rubber dots would prive cushion.

I think the finger cots will work Gene if you can find the size that will fit your pinky.  There is a raised edge on them where I think the ball would make contact with your pinky knuckle.

Question.  Gene--Do you feel you stay under the ball better with pinky tucked?  Or what reason are you going back?

Scotts,

I'll check out the finger cots. At this point, I have nothing to lose. I'm going back to the tuck because with my speed and up-the-boards style the tuck gives the ball that extra bit of finish that helps get the corners out.

One of the guys I bowl with has the same problem and has me tape up his pinky finger for him. He acn do it him self but it easier if he has help.
Here are some pics that show the procedure.
Step 1 http://home.mchsi.com/~s-cross-7-28-71/Step_1.jpg
Wrap the ring and pinky fingers together making 2-3 laps.
Step 2 http://home.mchsi.com/~s-cross-7-28-71/Step_2.jpg
Wrap the tip of the pinky finger making 2 laps or more to desired amount of padding leaving a long enough tail to make it around ring and tucked pinky at least 2 times.
Step 3 http://home.mchsi.com/~s-cross-7-28-71/Step_3.jpg
Caution: do not wrap too tightly unless you like your pinky to go numb.

He is planning to do away with this regimen and get a bowling glove. He will be modifying the glove by sewing a velcro strap to the tip of the pinky finger to hold it tucked and against the ring finger, he will also be sewing a pocket to the fingernail side near the tip of the pinky to put padding in.
Once he completes it I will get a pic if you wish.
He wants to go this route so he can untuck his pinky easily for spare shooting.

Gene,

Have you tried a simple small bandaid, covering just the first knuckle of your pinky, putting the padded part over the spur, of course?
