question about new AMF Qubica synthetic lanes
« on: August 19, 2008, 11:56:06 AM »
The house i bowl in is in the process of replacing their 30-year-old wood lanes with brand new AMF Qubica synthetic lanes. What kind of difference should i expect besides the obvious decrease in friction.

Higher prices,

Thats what happened to my house, they took out the old lanes and put in new Brunswick Anvilane synthetics, and the owner jacked the prices up.

My experience is that wood lanes would have bigger back ends, but it all depends on how your house takes care of the lanes.

Wood lanes hook more (based on same pattern). The wood lanes dry up quicker while the synthetic pushes oil down more. Expect higher scoring but not right away. Also, you will never have to resurface another ball again.

You can expect a lot of cussing, screaming and crying for the first few weeks as they experiment with new oil patterns in the house.  Then you can expect some more cussing, screaming and moaning as bowlers get used to the new conditions.

The lane surface will be more consistent from pair to pair.

reaction will be totally dependent on the lane machine. Many houses get a new lane machine at the same time.

Here scores went up in every house when they replaced wood with synthetics. The slick is slicker and dry is dryer.

One of the keys for handling synthetic lanes for me is to bring a variety of equipment.  Since the oil tends to carry down pretty badly if they put a lot of volume down, you definately need something with surface for around game 3 or 4.  However, the first couple games you might find an amazing reaction with a polished pearl.  Or, the backends might be flying early on and you need to go with surface immediately.  After more games, the heads start to dry up and you need to go back to throwing something pearl and you'll get quite a bit of hook since the surface is so smooth and consistent.
