And I do not mean limited oil outside 10. No oil outside of 10 on the entire lane.

The laneman physically cut off the roller (buffer) on the lane machine so that nothing touches the lane outside the 10 board on both the left and right side on the entire lane.

Came across this shot in travel league.

Treat the area outside 10th board like an out of bounds, don't let the ball get out there until after it exits the pattern. I'd go with a urethane to try and ease out any overreaction.

Good approach..

What's the volume of the oil inside? If it's medium, you could get away with a solid particle ball bouncing off this dry..

Well, I would not worry about bowling on that shot...if the league is a USBC sanctioned league then you were bowling on an illegal shot and the house should be fined. I would contact the local office and have the center investigated because if the mechanic did truly cut the buffer then that means that their lanes are like that every night and, since it was done intentionally, the house's sanction should be removed.

There must be a MINIMUM of 3 units of oil across the lane throughout the entire pattern (the 1 board gets a gimme here because no lane machine can oil the 1 board consistently).

However, if you truly want to play the shot it's a simple concept.

Use the 10 board as your breakpoint. If you miss right, you know it's going to hook there's no oil there. If you tug it, the ball will most likely sit in the oil.

I would use a ball with mild backend and play somewhere in the 17 to 12 range with lots of forward roll. This should get the ball to set up in the pocket and not stone 9 pins due to the angle.

Doug is right, but I know for a fact that most of the houses in the Ashtabula County Bowling Association are not "legal" when it comes to lane conditions. It is what it is today. Someone has a hand in someone elses pocket, sio these "little" thinks get overlooked, which further diminishes the integrity of the game, not that there's much left anyway.

lol there is no such thing as a USBC sanctioned shot. Illegal shot...who the @#$# you kidding!? Back in the 70's and before up to the 80's ABC would actually shut down the lane at most centers and inspect it if someone shot a 300. Now no one cares and if you did it in prebowling then USBC would just take your word for it because they are a fraud of an organization. Because it's ok to decline a proven professional of a 900 but if some kid does it before his own team actually bowls not once but twice then that's ok!

umm brian you dont get anything for shooting a 300 or anything during practice. Plus i would check into that and make sure they are allowed to do such a thing

All I can say is that house has money to burn. Putting out little or no oil is only asking for a lane to get beat up. High friction surface X friction coverstocks = burnt up lane. Reading again, are you only talking about the buffing area or zone?? If so, that changes thought process somewhat. The length of the pattern, the length of the buffing zone and also volume of oil will then dictate ideas of lane play and equipment.
There will always be something playable just might not be in your bag of tools to play correctly. This shot would be called "lefty hell" where I'm from.

My point here is that from what the OP states the lane man is intentionally doing this and it is a known fact.

The local association should at least be notified of the fact. We had this happen locally and there were enough complaints by some and enough honor scores being thrown by people that had no right throwing 600 much less 800 that the association was forced to investigate. The house was put on notice...fix it or they would pull their sanction.

As I said I would make the proper people aware...just because it's the right thing.

Playing the shot? you have gotten a bunch of good info but one thing I would suggest...do NOT try to play in the dry area. Use the dry as your bump/ breakpoint area but don't try to play up the dry. Regardless of what ball you use it'll bleed off too much energy and hit flat unless oyu have warp 9 ball speed.

This type of shot is the standard shot in many areas now and the local associations in these areas, if they check the lanes at all, will typically call the center before they come out, so the center can put down the "legal" shot for the inspection. When people learn to bowl on that condition, even 3 units on the outside (which is NOTHING) seems like a reverse block.

Second that. If you have this great "wall" down 10th board, I'd also go with a mild reactive piece with length or a urethane ball and just let it bounce off the dry boards, playing across 3rd arrow with a mild swing into the dry.
I suppose the biggest problem (esp. over time) will be keeping the ball in the pocket instead of breaking ever earlier, with lane traffic and oil absorption. At some point you might even be confident (or even forced) to play a VERY deep line with a polished ball that has a strong back end layout, for the big Hollywood hook.
