Has ABC ever had competition?
« on: September 21, 2004, 05:52:48 AM »
Just curious if in the history of the ABC, there has ever been another bowling organization come along and try to compete with the ABC for members?  Seems with all the topics/comments of disapproval with the state of bowling today that someone would take the initiative to knock the ABC off the block and revitalize the game with new ideas, rules, and incentives to bowl.  Any thoughts?

I seem to recall a rather short-lived organization back in the early 1980s.  Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of the organization.  One of the local proprietors decided to sanction with this new organization after ABC pulled the sanctions from his two centers due to repeated non-compliance with ABC lane condition procedures.

BPAA <Bowlng Propreitors of America> has thought about competing with the ABC/WIBC back number of years back.  I don't believe anything came of it.  It's been brought up a number of times by the BPAA.

There has been an organization in the Chicago area called Bowlers Club of Illinois that was organized by the bowling proprietors association.  To the best of my knowledge they were a glorified membership awards program. I don't remember them having a printed set of rules, inspection program, or bonding service.  There were a few houses in the area that made this available to leagues but I don't recall any real long term interest.

The word I heard is the BPAA was going to make a run at sanctioning if USBC failed this time around.  Since it passed, they are going to sit back and see what happens.  They still might make a run at taking over sanctioning.

BPAA has started and organization known as the Contemporary Bowling Association (CBA).  The purpose is to fund an industry marketting program to attract new bowlers to bowling centers.  The emphasis is on the non-league / non-sanctioned segment of the market.  USBC/ABC/WIBC has already transfered its marketting entity (Strike Ten Entertainment) to the new CBA organization since that concept is a better fit.

The TNBA is an African American Organization established to provide special services to its members.  I believe it was originally founded when ABC was a white / male only organization.  It has a very long and proud history.
