Has anybody increased their revs by...
« on: May 05, 2007, 12:14:30 PM »
increasing their forearm strength.  I'm not talking about injury or anything like that.  I'm talking about from 350rpm to 450rpm.  My coach says that my release/leverage is good but I would like more revs.  So as anybody already in good physical condition significatly increased their revs by working the forearms?

Thanks

George

Your from looks good and you throw the ball well, but I see no messengers wrapping the deck

I think in bowling, its most known that more revs increase pin carry.

I could be wrong but I feel that the reason you get more revs is because the ball stays on the fingers longer for some people than others barring thumb hanging etc. I get more revs no thumbing because I can cradle the ball (get under it) same as bending the elbow.  The ball has farther to travel vertically this way allowing you more time and leverage to use your hands and fingers to impart revs.

What got me thinking is watching big Wes Malott(sp?) his wrist is flat for what looks like the whole swing but at the end he has to be lifting the ball to impart the revs.  All of the crankers at my house do one of two things either they can keep their wrist cocked until release or they keep flat until right before release they start to cock and slightly after that release the thumb basically almost catching the ball.

In my swing as the ball gets closer to the flat spot gravity increases the weight of the ball causing me to lose some of my wrist cock and I'm not strong enough to regain it or maintain.  I just figured I would ask.

Actually, a lot... when they make a proper release and let the ball do the work. Revs is not necessarily carry, it is rather area to play with.
Revs are fine, but you do not need 500+ RPM to carry - you have just to hit your mark, have a free and well-timed release and create proper entry angle. If you want to hide release or balance problems with revs and/or speed, well, that's okay, but IMHO not the way I'd recommend in order to "play bowling". It is rather forcing it.

dizzyfugu  I totally understand that. But I'm not going on tour so the I would like to maximize my THS game with more area.  With today balls and lane conditions somebody with alot of hand and speed has the advantage.  Kinda like play on a golf course that bunkers and out of bounds around the 250 yard mark and after that the fairway is 30 yards wider with no obsticles.

Forget about rev's. If you can't get the balls weight block rolling into the pins, your rev rate is irrelevant.

se7en is right! I tried for years to be a cranker. You either are or not. It is that simple. Strength has nothing to do with it. I was a power lifter for years. I could bench 300, squat 330, and dead lift 420. I made the 1000 pound club, but I could not crank a ball worth anything.

The weight block rolling up to the pocket is what worked, that is why a guy with a great arm swing and lift can still throw a pancake block urethane ball and score. That is why a lot of guys on the pro tour back in the 1980's were skeptical about urethane. Back then if you could score with a yellow dot, or an LT 48 soft rubber, that was all you needed.

One of the younger guys on my team has one of the best releases I've seen in 30 plus years of bowling. He knows how to adjust to most of the lanes condotions we see in league.
His average is within one or two pins of me,a lifelong stroker. Why???I'm a little more accurate, and when he's off by one or two boards,it's washout city for him ,where I'm shooting a simple spare leave.
Se7en is right. Revs are fun to watch when coupled with accuracy. When dryer lanes are there, rev guys struggle because of throwing too strong of a ball, where us strokers can handle them by being a little more accurate.

That's what I mean. You need the proper match of revs and speed, plus the match of material with the lane condition, to succeed. Just revs is pretty pointless, even though revs can help generate area to play with.

I haven't read the other posts but if this has been said already.. well I say it again:

Why force it? You have enough revs to get a good reaction and carry? Why change it...

I have less than 300 revs and I just get the feeling for it and breaking the 200 average... I had over 400 revs before I changed my style. Did it help me to have such high revs... no.

Let the ball do the work and try to play smooth and clean. No force needed in bowling... you are not a jedi!

gfh....An artificial help for more revs is smaller finger inserts. Use grips that only allow your fingers  to enter halfway to first joint.    Another is to practise using your wrist and fingers to support the ball and increasing your thumb reverse.    With this comes a requirement for earlier timing.     Can't plant and rip with the extreme reverse in thumbs.

Is that true?  I've been using grips that are small, with just about half my fingertip fitting in.  I just ordered some Vise grips because they seem to fit better and I can actually get my finger down to the first joint.  Crap, I can't afford to lose any more revs!
