I've noticed that a lot of people trying to selling used equipment here are really overpricing their stuff..

One example I noticed was for a 1st line ball from Storm for $85 plus shipping. Plus shipping? That would put it near $100 for a used ball and, unless you have close to the same span, it would cost you about $40 to have it plugged and redrilled. For another $40 you could buy one NIB.

My rule of thumb is that, if it's used and a NEW release or a popular release, the ball should only command 50% of the NIB price (at best).

NOTE: This rule does not apply to Lane#1 balls due to the nature of people that buy them..

Am I really off on this??

Is this all of a sudden and does it pertain to everyone??? Cuz I get lamb Basted when I sell stuff..Although my prices on most are very competetive used and new. I do ask for premium prices for stuff I know I can sell for those prices. Hard to gets and rare stuff. You know the stuff sleepy.. All the stuff so readily available but nobody posts it for sale for what everyone can get it for...Most used stuff I sell is already plugged,resurfaced and oil extracted with the Haus and Revivor. That's a $50 job right there and I don't usually ask for more than $75 on a used ball. To each his own.. Sell for whatever you can get for it.. LOL

I usually just ask for 50% of the ball NIB, not because I think it's a fair price but because I know people on here are cheap and want everything for nothing. And It doesn't matter what you ask for on here, someone if going to try and cut you down $20+ anyway.

I agree with jkiser01 that half isn't really a fair number for low games current release, especially when most are just gonna change out the thumb slug and be on there way.

not sure if anyones done this or not but i was looking at some of the balls on ebay and i like how a new post for a ball gets hit with 5 to 8 bid all from new members and then no other bids from those members...

If they were wanting a reserve price ...PUT IT IN... dont hose the bidding.

That's just their way of getting around the difference in eBay's fee structure for a $0.99 starting bid and a bid with a $60 dollar reserve. Get used to it, it's as common as jacking up the cost of shipping on eBay to cover fees.

Here's a few things that bug me:

People list several balls for sale, all with prices that include shipping. We all know that you've included around $15-20 into the price to cover the shipping costs. I turn around and ask for a package price on 2 or more balls and the seller offers to take off $5 off each additional ball! I'm going to need a bigger discount than that to take 4 balls off your hands!

Now, you have balls listed for $60, 50, 45, and 40. That means you really have them listed as $45, 35, 30, and 25. Shipping for one ball is around $15. You can usually add an additional ball for about $5. You can ship 4 balls for no more than about 3 times the cost of one ball - so around $45.

Yes, I know the numbers go higher from coast to coast. I see FedEx wants around $22 for a 16lb package and UPS wants close to $25. Adding a second ball is $39 for FedEx and $43 for UPS. 4 balls jumps to $65 for FedEx and $72 for UPS.

Staying in the same general area - say the east coast - the differences are more in line with what I said in the beginning.

1 ball - $14 for UPS. 2 balls for $22, and 4 balls for $36. Thats Maryland to Tennessee.

Then, some of these sellers want me to pay extra for using Paypal? Pay extra so they can get guaranteed money and have it instantly? I don't ask the sellers to deduct $2-3 for me if have to go out and pay for a money order and a stamp! Its the cost of doing business!

i dont even think ebay will let you accept money orders anymore or your not supposed to .... I listed an auction a week ago and made a comment " if your going to message me and ask me to accept western union or a money order for 2 times the amount , dont waster your time." It told me i couldnt post the auction refrencing a money order because M.O. are acceptable forms of payment lol .... So ebay gets their cut from the listing, the FVF , and the 4% from paypal..... what a racket lol

My typical rule of thumb for in house used ball sales is to charge 50% of my normal on the shelf retail for a single drill used ball. This will include adjusting the span to fit the bowler. This price does not include full plug and redrill, inserts or thumb slugs.

Example.....

Black Widow Venom.....my shop retail $185 drilled. therefore a used ball would command a used price of $90 with span adjusted to fit. New inserts $5, slug $10..$105 out the door ready to use.

Also take into account the price difference for plug/drill and fresh drill.
If your pro-shop has caught on, and started to fight back to the "internet ball" group, they've jacked up their base drilling price, to prevent people from buying outside the pro shop.
It might be only $140 to your door for a brand new ball, but my pro-shop charges $65 to drill an outside ball. That puts you at $205 + grips/slugs. Buy a used ball for $100, Thumb plug+grips at $120 out the door. $85 saving is a chunk of change, it's hard to act like $100 for a used ball was over priced.
