Brooklyn Strikes at the End of a Game
« on: December 24, 2008, 04:09:40 AM »
First My Opinion. A Strike is a Strike.

Over the years I notice that most bowlers remember the Brooklyns thrown against them (causing them to lose a match or game) vs the brooklyns they have thrown to win.

And the memory only seems to be of ones that are in the last 3 frames. I have seen a guy complain about someone throwing brooklyn in 1st ball of the 10th but seems to forget his own 2 brooklyns at the beginning of the game.

Talkin' Trash!

I agree, a strike is a strike. I actually enjoy a light hit in the pocket because then I get to see all the pins go flying around and smack each other.

Same here.

The only brooklyn strike I can honestly remember was the one I had in the 6th frame on my way to my first perfect game in 2000.

In "Confessions of a Winning Poker Player," Jack King said, "Few players recall big pots they have won, strange as it seems, but every player can remember with remarkable accuracy the outstanding tough beats of his career."

Quote from Rounders that deals with this exact situation lol. People just seem to remember when somebody else gets lucky on them, but they don't care when they get lucky on somebody else.

Maybe it's because I haven't been playing too long, but when I see someone go Brooklyn a few times in a game, I just shrug it off. Sometimes you're lucky, and sometimes you're not.

I once threw 5 strikes that went Brooklyn. It was the most annoyed I'd ever felt while playing bowling. Probably because I knew the other team might not like it too much.

I have a few buddies that get very irate at others brooklyns, I just shrug it off, it happens.

In my local alley though, we all have a good time and due to it being a smaller place and a smaller town we all know each other well and when you throw a brooklyn you have to be ready for flack, we have the crowd that has the *cough* and the heckling, its a riot.

It is annoying when you are battling and someone from the other team makes a horrible shot and carries it, while you smoke the rack and flush a solid 9 or 8, but it's just a game.

It will all even itself out in the end.  You might lose by 4 on a questionable carry, but you'll win by 1 on the same thing eventually.

As someone else already mentioned, the only Brooklyn or Jersey as some people call us left handed folk crossing over, in my career that I remember was strike #12 for my one and only sanctioned 300 game.

Cut me some slack though, I was 15, averaging 150, throwing a urethane ball, and just praying to keep the ball on the lanes because my legs became jello.

Best shot I've ever thrown as far as I am concerned!

My buddy's game is basically one dimensional...down and in. When his line drys up he has no option but to try to carry brooklyn. He's not too bad at it either. Kinda pisses the other team off and gets them off their game too.

When there was no other shot I have lined up Brooklyn to win scratch matches, too me a strike is a strike and listening to the other better bowler whine just makes it all that much better.

Because a Win is a Win!!!

My most memorable Brooklyn strike was in the 12th frame for my first 300 game, my only "excuse" for throwing it so bad was I had to wait about 5 minutes(and that is not exaggerating) for the ball return between balls 11 and 12.

I agree, a strike is a strike, ask Chris Barnes.  He made a good amount of money throwing that Brooklyn, and he smiled all the way to the bank.
