I was talking to my ball driller about sport bowling and we agreed it was all about damage control. You have to throw away the idea of attacking strikes and find yourself a line where you are safe, i.e., one that won't leave you artwork to pick up with your spare ball.
That being said, my wife bowls in some handicap tournaments where they lay out a sport condition (usually), and the best shot is usually inside. The funny part is, that is her 'A' game anyway. She loves playing the third arrow and doesn't enjoy a house shot when the line is outside (although she can play it). So the first time she bowled on the sport shot, she barely noticed the difference. As a result, her tournament average on that condition is actually slightly higher than her league average.
We won't even talk about MY sport shot game. I have described it on these boards before as resembling a puppy trying to run on a sheet of ice for the first time.
