Have a case of the pulls...need help!
« on: September 17, 2004, 05:56:40 PM »
I have been pulling my first ball for about two weeks now and not exactly sure how to get out of this yoink-fest.  I realize the best way would be to get a good set of eyes behind to watch me bowl, but what can I do to try and solve the problem myself first?
Thanks
Aaron

I want to say that I'm not, but once again it would probably help to see me bowl...I worked a bit in the offseason on having a smoother delivery, but old habits could be making there way back.

Most of the time if I'm pulling it is because I get tired and start getting lazy with my push away or get frustrated and start muscling it.

2 usual causes of pulling it inside, when you normally do hit your target, are dropping the bowling shoulder as you go into the release and not doing a deliberate, full pushaway, resulting in early timing (ball/hand getting to the release point before the feet get there).

Usual solutions are to keep shoulders square and think that in practice sessions, and, also in practice sessions, to make the pushaway a very deliberate and purposeful one to almost force your timing back to normal. I say, "in practice sessions", because during normal bowling, this might throw off your concentration about regular items like targeting, lining up, following the transition, etc.

You could also be coming up (raising up) at the foul line when your armswing starts to come through.
You could be taking your eyes off of your target.
Generally your armswing is going to follow your eyes.

Make sure you are getting a good deep knee bend and keeping yuor eyes on the target until the ball rolls over it.

Sometimes finding a flaw or problem is a matter of eliminating what you aren't doing incorrectly..

I get the "pulls" when I move my shoulder forward during the release of the ball in trying to guide it over my target, rather than freeze shoulder and not try to guide the ball over target.

For me, i start to pull the ball when i close my shoulder too fast. Keeping the left arm in front longer, allows me to feed the ball right alot eaiser.

Every year I do the same thing. I'm always way to pumped up and trying to get to much everything on the ball. My fast feet cause me to get to the line before my downswing is in the right position for release which causes me to pull. It's like I'm throwing a discus. I slow my feet down, especially my first step and it works wonders.

I was doing the same thing.  I went to practice and asked my coach for some advice.  It ended up the problem was in the push away.  I had started pushing away up and out rather than down and out.

The advice my coach gave was to make sure and push to the ground in the push away allowing the timing to remain natural.  Being off in the push away usually results in the ball being either ahead or, in my case, behind the feet.

He also told me that I need to make sure and get in some practice time weekly.  What happens is during league and tournaments you are always "On" and never just working on getting the right feel.  In practice there is no pressure to score and the focus is getting the right feel.

Whenever I get the pulls, I look to my knees and my slide.  I've got bad knees and when I'm off my game I won't stay flexed at the line which throws off my balance and my timing.

So when I pull the ball, I focus on a good knee bend and a solid slide.

Pulling the ball usually comes from popping up at the line as the ball is coming thru. As Constantine suggested, trying bending more at the time of release. I would try bending at the waist, more so than at the knee. =:^D
