About 15 years ago I quit bowling with my brother because he just couldn't stand it when people would get brooklyn strikes or go thru the nose and strike. He thought he was better than he was. He felt he put 9 out of 10 balls in the pocket and should have struck every time he put it there. He was caring a 190-195 average at the time.
The straw that broke the camels back was when we were bowling a team that had lots of handicap. They were getting very very lucky. They were having a "career night" as a team. I tried to calm my brother down but the more he watched, the luckier they got(so he thought). Then he would throw a pocket shot and leave a ringing ten. He did this a few times. The last time he did it, he came walking back and put his shoulder right in the chest of the biggest guy on their team(guy was standing in walkway between counters in back of bowler area). This guy is 6'6" about 280lb. I thought, oh cr@p here we go. Luckily for my bro and probably me too, the guy was pretty cool headed. He probably figured the arse whoop'n they were giving our team in bowling was enough. After that confrontation, I went back and tried talking to my bro to calm him down and then he flew off the handle at me. That's when I said, enough is enough. I've never bowled on a team with him since. His son started bowling with him 5 years later when his son was 12. His son quit bowling all together after just 2 years bowling with his dad.
-
I've known guys like that but haven't bowled with one.
We have a guy on our team who could be a little wild anyway and he would throw a couple brooklyn just to get the other guy started.
The other guy would get so perturbed that he was beat as he couldn't pull it back together.
-
No offense, but 190-195 isn't good. He should realize that some people are just lucky and are there to have a good time. I know people like that. He is probably a hot head at other things too. I try to stear clear of those teammates. That attitude is why some people are turned away from league bowling.
-
Not to that degree, but I did quit a team last year that had an overly-competitive guy that nobody seemed to like.
I don't mind bowling with competitive people that are driven to win, but when you say things like 'hopefully she'll get a split and we'll have a chance to win total' when it's a mixed league with some 60 year old lady just there to have fun, it doesn't sit well. Especially when said lady can hear him say it.
Talk about the equivalent of going through a break up. I found it funny that the team felt like they owned me or something. Took a few months before they would talk to me, yet I wasn't the one with the issues.

There is nothing so easy to learn as experience and nothing so hard to apply.

I have been guilty of being hot headed in all sports. Starting to calm it down as I get a little older, but it still creeps in every once in a while. I don't usually say anything to anyone other than myself, but it is heard by others. I cuss myself out for throwing a bad ball, even go as far as to blame the lanes on occasion. But to root against someone like a 60 year old in a mixed league, or to physically assault someone.
Hell I feel better about myself...lol
-
I haven't quit bowling with "that person". I just avoid it in the first place. Everyone gets good breaks and bad breaks, and they might even-out over a period of time.
I do also believe that people who throw the ball better create more breaks than those who don't (something that most "good bowlers" would NEVER admit to).
I am here to admit that although I'm only a decent bowler compared to some of the guys I bowl with, I GET PLENTY OF GOOD BREAKS!! MAYBE MORE THAN I DESERVE... And I'm quite okay with that.

Sadly, the only person I've ever had to "fire" was an older man who started to succumb to dementia.
He was in his 70s when he started bowling with us and he wasn't all that good anyway, but we needed a person and he was reliable and paid every week (a very underrated quality in league bowlers). His wife would bring him and she was a complete sweetheart.
About midway through the first season, someone said something that he took offense to -- I don't even remember what, and it wasn't about him -- and he flew off the handle. We thought it was weird but let it go.
He started to have more frequent outbursts and finally, after his second season with us ended, two of the other guys on the team gave me an "us-or-him" ultimatum for the next year. It was pretty clear he was losing his cognitive ability.
I called his wife a couple of times trying to get in touch with her to tell her (I figured it was better to deal with her than him), and left a couple of messages. A day or so later, he got arrested for stealing a handful of 5-cent candy from a gas station and pulling a knife on the clerk. That took care of our problem for us.

Agreed. When I miss by 5 boards and strike, that's a good break. Oh, did I mention that I am not that good either. lol

The only people I won't bowl with are those that don't pay their dues, with only two exceptions. The mixed league I just finished, I bowled with three other ladies who averaged in the 120s. They'll never be better than 120-130-average bowlers, they throw their plastic or conventionally-drilled entry-level balls 10mph straight down the middle of the lane. I bowled lead-off, a 110-average lady bowled anchor.
I had a lot of people ask why I bowl with them. We lost a lot of points and finished last in the league by quite a lot. Every time, the reason I bowled with them is because they stuffed money in the envelope every week. They were reliable, they told me when they were gonna be gone and got a sub. They didn't complain about the lanes and they didn't complain when the other team got lucky breaks.

Our team had a couple of young guys this year that threw a fit every time they hit the pocket and left a stone or weak 10 pin. The next to the last week of league they were struggling and were getting more agry because of a situation just like yours the other team could hit anywhere and carry. Our #2 position bowler proceeded to throw two successive gutter balls on his first ball in frames 3&4 of the last game and walked back and stated that we just as well be swept. We have a dilemma because one of the two young guys is the nephew of our #4 position bowler and he is not sure how to let his nephew know that we do not want to bowl with them next year. One thing is for sure our #3 position bowler and myself will not put up with all the whining, swearing and stomping that we had to this past year.

Bowling "vampires"= they suck all the fun out of bowling!!!

I haven't quit bowling with "that" person yet, but sometimes he really gets on my nerves. I'm a 150+ average bowler, (although if I'm in the zone, a string of 200+ games is not out of my reach), and he's probably like a 110+ average at the most. I tend to need some time to get into the groove in the first couple of games, and this is where his comments come in. He'll be like, "Oh, not a bad roll", "Finally, you got a strike", etc. I consider this offensive since I throw a genuine hook and have invested quite an amount of money into my equipment. Basically, I'm trying to adjust accordingly, and he'll be breathing down my neck with his asinine comments. He throws back-up, and uses a polyester ball. The thing is he throws a fit if he hits the 1-2 and leaves a stone 7 or 10. He'll be like cursing, and wondering why he couldn't carry the strike. I've told him many times to learn how to slide with his left foot (he's right-handed and slides with his right foot, by the way), and invest in at least a reactive ball to improve his striking percentage, all to no avail. He just gets worse everytime. The only that can shut him up, is when I bring out my Cell and hit a 5-bagger, just to spite him. Even then, he'll be staring daggers at me and feel that I don't deserve those strikes. Any thoughts on whether I should dump this guy for good?

190 - 195 is not good? I know a lot of people are bowling high but come on.
For me, I've found it difficult to bowl very well when I am high or drunk. But, I probably don't care either. Sorry, couldn't resist!!
League bowling is supposed to be fun. The season is too long to bowl with people that you don't like or cause complications. We had a guy on our team this season, he was NEVER EVER ready to bowl when it was his turn. MOST all of the time, he was sitting/standing right behind our lanes, but we still had to prod him to get him to bowl. We were among the last teams done EVERY night. Don't think I will bowl with him again. No Chris, its not you!
There are some people that may not want to bowl with Ballreviews own Chris Leftwich. He changes balls a couple times a game, that can be annoying. Chris is a fruit loop too, but I like him. He shows up every week, he pays every week, and he doesn't kick or hit things when he bowls bad. We ALWAYS laugh and joke around, and oh yeah, he's ready to bowl when its his turn.

Not the same thing, but there is a guy like this. He is not a hot head, but he does complain alot about other bowlers going through the nose or brooklyn. But yet a guy on his team that does this all the time. I guess it is alright when it is on your team, but not the other team.
Bowling with guys like you mentioned are no fun. You do not look forward to bowling that night. You can try all you want to ignore that person, but it is very hard to do.

Just had to deal with an issue like this. My monday night league, I'm the high avg on the team at like 220, and everyone else is between 165-180. 3 of the teammates have been bowling together for years, and I joined up last year cause I had known one of them for years. "that guy" joined up about the same time cause we needed another bowler and he was looking for a team. At first he was alright, points the ball off the corner. Carried about a 165 at the time, and would listen to me when I made suggestions and whatnot. Not on my advice he went out and bought a fury, and black widow (still mostly throws them straight) but over the past year his avg raised up to around 180 and he was 2nd high on the team behind me. Once we got to the middle of this season his head got entirely too large for his body. The comments he would spew, towards us AND the other team. His attitude had gone way down hill. He never listens to any suggestions I make to him and even gets on my case if I even open. Finally one of the other teammates and I told our captain it was an US or HIM deal next year. So now we are looking for a new bowler for next year, lol.
Think the straw that broke my personal back was a game about 3 months ago where I happened to open twice in a row. I come back and the first thing he does is ask, Well what the &%*% is wrong with you? Oh well.......

Guy like that used to bowl here. One night, the other team was having "one of those nights" and just hammering us. Seemed like lots of shots were going brooklyn and carrying. Then I saw why.
The captain of the other team saw how much it was bothering the guy, so he was telling his team to do it on purpose, if they could. They were pretty good at it, I must say.
Well, when the guy found out it was being done on purpose and was aimed directly at him, he went NUTS. Jumped into the middle of the other teams sittee and started raving at the captain of their team.
Captain calmly gets up, confronts the guy, and knocks about 3 teeth out of the guys mouth. Fight? No, the loudmouth didn't want anymore. Furthermore, he ( the loudmouth ) was escorted to the door, told not to ever come back, and that they would ship his stuff to him C.O.D.
Owner then told me HE would pay for the empty spot until we filled it, that is how glad he was to get rid of the guy.
Funny thing is, we won more games and bowled better without the guy, even with only 4 guys and a blind.

I finally quit a team I had been bowling with for about 5 years last season because of "that guy". I actually changed houses because it was a mens league and I wanted to get as far from him as possible. Here's the kicker...After 2 weeks this year he quit the team. If he had any class he would have quit last year and I would have stayed there. Oh well I am now bowling with 4 guys that I find really nice and no big heads or bad attitudes I was really glad I made the change as hard as it was to make.
-
I've bowled with that guy.

I think anyone that has bowled leagues for a good number of years has had him on their team at some point, and then gotten rid of them ASAP.
It was no fun and there was no enjoyment when you have the hot head on your team, no matter what he averages.
Having been on both sides of "career night bowling", I always operated under the assumption that when another bowler has their career night, we should just take our lumps and be happy for them. When it is your turn, just go with the flow and have fun with it. There is no need for anyone to rub someone's face in it, or to detract from someone else's accomplishments.
IMHO, fifteen years ago, 190-195 bowlers were upper shelf bowlers in the leagues, similar to the 205 - 210 guys in the tougher houses today.

Pop_1 15 years ago 195 was good. Have to remember times change and averages have gone up a lot. I have been in those shoes before of getting mad when the other team gets the "lucky strikes" and I am in the pocket and can't carry. I have also enjoyed the other side a few nights as well. It is frustrating when you think you are just hammerring the pocket and can't trip the 10. I have really learned to enjoy the good times and the bad times you just have to take as a learning curve.

15 years ago, I was in juniors and there were plenty of guys averaging 205-210. That is what I am basing it off of. I actually thought the shots I bowled on then were easier than they are now. It truely was bumper bowling. But, I could be wrong.
-
I'd say 25 years ago 195 was good. By 1993, resin was out as well as sanction machine lane oiling technology.

Can't say that I would ever quit because of someone but there is a guy that I would love to cram my fist into his face.
The guy is the "trash talker" guy in our house. Biggest mouth in the world, and we was in a tournament sat with this moron on our lanes and all he did was run his mouth. It didn't bother me too much till the very last game, he crossed the line then. Me and my partner was having a medicore night for us and so we was already in a bad mood.
But the first and second game he was just saying oh that was some lucky shots right there and all this BS which was fine (evne though he and his partner had about 10 brooklyns a piece) I just laughed and went on. Well the third game comes around and he knows now that we don't care about what hes been saying and we were totally killing him and his partner in score so he starts threatning us saying that he was going to whoop our arses and then started calling us gay.
It didn't bother me up until the last few frames of the last game. I guess it was because I had a 300 game going and he was wanting to get under my skin. Well he did. i slipped on my balanced and fouled first shot of the tenth.
I don't know what his deal was and I've never liked him before because of his loudness but he really pushed my buttons. I never got mad infront of him because thats what they want is a reaction, but if he starts with me next time, Im knocking his lights out.

Why I left a team I liked to bowl with on Wednesday for, they didn't want to kick him off the team so I quit. Not only did he not pay when he came, you never knew if he was going to even show up,and always late too.
