« on: January 15, 2008, 06:48:43 AM »
Ok guys I'm really trying to learn about bowling balls in general.  Like the pap and the mass bias, and why the ball act differently when drilled like this and like that.  And for the life of me I cant understand it.  Like i through a total nv thats polished then sanded to 1000 on the track great ball love it pap in above and to the right of the ring finger. Then I have a anger oob finish pap right under the middle finger does nothing goes straight no hook no nothing.  Im really serious about bowling come close to 300 games and alwyas looking for advice on which balls to add to the arsneal.  So any help would appreciated.  I would like to know what balls to add I have an total nv and a fury but seems like im missing something

The PAP, or positive axis point- point on the surface of the ball that is at the end of the bowler's axis of rotation upon delivery.

Basically what this means is that it is a tool for us Pro Shop Professionals to help fit equipment into your game- more customized for you.  The way you throw the ball (hand position at release) determines where the PAP is located.

The Mass Bias is the Preferred Spin Axis for asymmetrical cores.  The PSA (or mass bias) in a bowling ball occurs when the weight block or portion of weight block is more dominant in one direction inside of a bowling ball, this PSA is the axis which a ball desires to rotate around, and which it flares to achieve this rotation.
Again this is another marker to help set the bowling balls dynamics into your friend.

In order to have a good recommendation it is important to head to your local Pro Shop Professional to have him/her watch you bowl, identify your PAP, and he/she can look at your current arsenal and fill in the gaps for you.

Hope this helps.

You mean the pin is under the ring finger, not the PAP.  The distance between the pin and the PAP determines the percentage of the ball's flare potential that is used.  3 3/8" pin to PAP is 100%, from 3 3/8" to 0" the flare decreases linearly and the ball breaks earlier and is more "arcy".  From 3 3/8" to 6 3/4" the flare also decreases linearly, but the ball breaks later and more sharply.  Layouts should always be expressed as pin to PAP distance instead of a "pin under ring finger".   --  JohnP

Depending on your age, ask your local pro-shop to see if you can go in and have them show you how to polish balls. While you are there, you can talk to them and ask questions.

Most shops are more then happy to teach someone about equipment and how to drill it. After you start to understand what the different drillings do, you will be able to understand what ball would fit where in your arsenal.

But go into the pro-shop and see if they are willing to HIRE you to help them out with little things around the shop.

The pin a colored dot on two piece balls that generally indicates the top of the core.

When you are talking a 3 inch pin that is the distance from the CG (Center of gravity) on the ball to the colored pin. The CG is generally mark with some sort of a punch mark at the factory. A proshop should always weigh the ball before drilling to ensure that the ball has been marked correctly.

Asymmetrical balls also have a mass bias point marked on the ball. Asymmetrical balls have cores that are not consistent in size and shape, lumpy maybe a better word.

Each bowler has a PAP (positive axis point) determined by their release and is a point about which the ball rotates immediately after release. This is referred to in a measurement of like 5 ¼ inch over and 3/8 inch up from the grip center.

Proshops can use this PAP to determine where the Pin, CG, and mass bias point should be placed to achieve a desired reaction.

You will hear numbers of 5 inch pin and 3 in CG meaning the pin is 5 inches from the PAP and the CG is 3 inches.

You will also hear about placing the mass bias in a quadrant around the grip.

Find the "Unofficial FAQ" thread in this forum and read it all.  It will take a while, but there's a LOT of great information there for a beginner.  --  JohnP
