What's up with URETHANE?
« on: June 07, 2009, 10:22:39 AM »
Up until recently, a REGULAR URETHANE ball has been a rarity, an oddity even, due to what was termed a "lack of interest" in them. Visionary was the seeming last bastion of the urethane ball with the Gargoyle model, but people looked at it more as a curiosity than an actual option.

A.M.F. had the Black Angle re-make, but it wasn't a performance ball, just a cheap, entry level alternative.

Visionary, being who they are, have persisted in having something like this in their line, even though the demand was limited, because their customers said they wanted one.

Then, last year, Lane1 jumped in with the Liberator. A good ball with a good cover. Filled a niche in their lineup that only it could have.

Then, this year, Storm has re-introduced a urethane model into their lineup with the Natural. And now Seismic is touting a "soon-to-be" model named Desperado that is slated to be an asymmetric urethane model.

If urethane is so "worthless" and "useless", why are so many companies trying to come out with new, updated urethane pieces? Could it be that some have discovered that urethane is a great alternative to reactives when the lanes get toasty?

Could all those Faball fans have been right?

Years ago I gave away my old Rhinos and Turbos!  I traded back for them for some reason.  WooHoo!  I just may plug them and try them again.

People forget that reactive resin balls are urethane with additives such as plasticizers. There are many NIB "old school" urethane's on EBAY right now such as Wine U-dots, Rhinos, Brunswick The Edge I and Edge II, Star Trak Force 10, Star Trak Equalizer, Ebonite Gyro 1 urethane, Manhattan urethane  etc...

I will never consider urethane balls useless and actually want another one right now. In the last 90's when I was 15-16 I was getting a new ball, I was using a Columbia Blue Beast and wanted a reactive resin, cause that is what the pros threw and most of what better league bowlers used. My dad told me to get a regular Blue Hammer, that thing was so good and still is today, it not the first ball I grab for now but I still use it for spares, broken down lanes and it just gives me that good smooth reaction. I will never give that ball up.

well IMO it's about freaking time the ball companies started makeing some good urethane balls instead of the once a month hook monsters.I hope this is a start of a long trend and they develop some great urethane products once in awhile instead of once every ten years,my poor thunderflash is tired!

Don't forget the Groove Urethane which has been around for quite awhile. That ball allowed me to say goodbye to plastic since it covers the really dry and spare spot in the bag.

Don't forget the pure hammer series of urethane.

Urethane will hook. My brother got the Visionary Blue Gargoyle and it hooked way more then he/we expected.

With normal oil conditions it is an arching ball without the snap on the backend of resin. But it will hook.

I know a lefty here that throws an original 16lb urethane purple Nitro averages 230-240 and shoots a lot of honor scores. He puts good revs on the ball and plays it up the gutter for days. Very accurate bowler.

The manufacturers realize that more and more competitive bowling on short to medium length patterns makes for a bigger market.
