Title: Headphones while bowling? Really?
Post by: HamPster on January 08, 2011, 01:05:42 AM
Ive noticed an odd new trend over the last year or so, as people are listening to music while they are actually bowling, not just in between shots. Mostly a youth girls thing, but ive seen a handful of adults doing it too. Really? Little irritating bowling people who are wearing headphones, dont know why.

That's just like, your opinion, man.

i know trends chage every few yrs...but this is kinda dumb i think!! they say it helps you relax and focus..??
ya only if you are listening to the soft sounds of nature or the gentle waves coming up the beach!!! LMFAO
for me most my music kinda gets me pumped up sorta...not the type of thing i need when making a good shot...
i LOVE f'n with ppl with those things on!! "hey, man you got a phone call at the counter! did you hear it"
or the one i prefer.."they called your 50/50 ticket!!!!!!"    HAHAHAHA!

I did this a lot last year because I really didn't enjoy bowling in one of my leagues, mainly because of my teammates. I'd just listen to music to block them out and make it a little more enjoyable on myself.

I occasionally wear my ipod. I could care less what others are wearing while they bowl.

First I have to ask, is anyone else getting ads for headphones on this thread?

Second I used to do this when I was just getting on a run some times in tournament play. It helps keep you focused. But then they made it illegal in tournament play here for youth so that was over... I knew people who swore by it and their scores spoke for themselves.

Haha I'm getting them too!

I don't mind the headphones as much as the bluetooths in people's ears. That looks dumb!

I guess it's true, bowlers really are a bunch of whiny snots.

Who cares if somebody wants to listen to music while bowling?  Does it really bother you that much?  This ranks up there with the "do people just bowl to have a reason to drink?" threads.

You guys always find something to complain about, and then come here and complain that league participation is falling!

I've actually witnessed some bowlers with a cell phone pinned to their ear (while bowling)...go figure!

I've seen my teammate throw the ball while on on the phone!

I'd say there are 3-4 people in my league that bowl with their ipods.  I guess it relaxes them or helps them to stay focused.

I have no issue with the bowlers who elect to listen to music while they are bowling.   What gets me are the ones who during practice, leave a ringing ten pin and step on the foul line to reset it.  Then when they leave one in competion and miss it and you hear them say "I should practice shooting those more".    Idiots...............

I wear my Ipod when I'm practicing by myself. Helps me to keep my pace a little slower so I'm not rushing thru games and getting tired. There are a few people in our league who used to wear them when bowling,  mostly lower average, straighter bowlers who where just there for fun and didn't come in with a team. It don't matter to me what they do, as long as I can't hear it when on the approach and they don't walk up next to me. Honestly, I would rather have everyone in the league wearing an Ipod then they few people who think they need to have there cell phone ringers on high so when they get a call the whole house can hear there "awesome" ring tones...

Me: I threw an awesome shot and left a 4-9
Dad: Then it wasn't so awesome was it
Me: Shut up...it looked good to me

So I guess this is a little more widespread then.  For me, it's more odd and out of place.  Practice is one thing, youth leagues are one thing, but in adult leagues it seems rather rude.  Makes it kind of seem like you want to be out there by yourself, left alone, and want nothing to do with anyone else, even on your own team.  It's impossible to try to talk to them, give high fives or low fives or whatever, just doesn't seem like something that should go on during league.  I'm not trying to act like some stuffy stuck up traditionalist, I just don't really like it.  They don't generally pay attention to what's going on, they can't hear anything, it's just wholly irritating.

I've noticed it too.   However, those who I see use them for the most part still have one piece off and still bsing with people inbetween shots and what not.  Doesn't bother me as it doesn't affect my bowling whatsoever.

It's not wide spread here.

For me it comes down to being a person who cares about others and the need to interact with your team and the other teams/bowlers in the league.  Since, bowling is a social activity why bowl if you can not interact with others?

FYI.... when you only have 10min or practice, its nice to get more than 4-6 shots in!! would you rather me leave a 10 then just say "oh im not shootn it!!" and leave it for you..????! i'd bet you are the type of person who would take the xtra time to rerack.... i rather some1 step on it(if it will reset. not all houses do this) gives me a full rack.. ya some ppl will shoot a 10 one or 2 times in practice but most/me would like to get loose throwing a few shots..at a full rack....

On Topic:  I just don't "get" headphones while bowling.  For me, it would really get in the way, especially the cord on an ipod.  Any competitive bowler won't be using them.  If it's open play and just some kids out for a night, I can understand that, but not in league or tournament play.....

It's no big deal really.  Just another byproduct of our introverted society.  There is so little interaction between teams and even team members in todays leagues compared to what it used to be... I blame the automatic scorer for starting this!

I find it very annoying and anti-social. We have a guy who wears them once in a while and I've never seen him shoot a good game with them on. The rest of our team seems to be getting tired of it also. This same guy also runs a couple pots and disapears to check scores which really screws up our teams pace. Imagine trying to get someones attention because its their turn to bowl when they also are wearing headphones. Getting old!

I've worn them during practice, league, and a few tournaments that allow it.  I've seen Tommy Jones and Jeff Carter use them during practice then take them off...but I guess as anther posted stated.."they aren't competitive".  To each his own.

I used to do it, but it was back when I was bowling at a crappy center that wasn't even sanctioned. They would blast music every session, so I figured I'd rather listen to my own music. I don't do it anymore, but I see people in my youth league do it all the time.

I bowl on 3 league teams and on 2 of the nights, I have a teammate that listens to music.  To each his/her own but it's a growing disconnect that is so annoying to me, I can't even give advice to the teammates for the music.  My harsh opinion is if you want to be in your own world....stay home.

It knocks out one of Nash's 4 objectives for the evaluation of a sport/physical activity:

1. Cognitive

2. Neuro-muscular coordination

3. Physical conditioning

4. Social---(out)

You guys act like you can't hear anything but the music with earphones on. With the standard iPod/iPhone earbuds in, unless the music is at a stupid high level, I can hear people talking around me. So you wouldn't have to scream at me to get my attention or even talk to me.

For the record, I don't wear them bowling, but it's not as bad as some of you make it sound.

I'm in the process of trying to find out where I fit in the bowling world. I do not know my tech specs of my game, but it's all a learning process.

Again, if you wear headphones while bowling you are a loser and pretty much everyone thinks that except for the few losers who do it.  JM"O"

Run the wire under your shit and keep cord tight to your body.......

I've bowled with people in leagues who do it. Those people do not do it anymore, but there is one guy in the Thursday league I started this year who wears headphones.

I hope he trips over the wire. It would totally make my day.

Maybe, but I'm not going to bother trying to talk to someone who has earbuds in because I'll just have to repeat myself when they pull one out and go "Huh?"  Perhaps you are different, but most people I've encountered (whether in a bowling alley or elsewhere) that have buds in have them turned up.

Here's a situation I witnessed, a woman in the mixed league was bowling next to the men's league a while back. One of the men was on the front 11 when Ms Headphones not aware of anything but her music walks up on this guy going for number 12 . He made a bad shot pulling it inside leaving a 6-10. He was civil about it but you could tell he wasn't happy about the distraction. I will say that I've tried practicing with them on but would never wear them in league. It seems very anti social and somewhat rude. Having headphones on may help you focus but it also makes you unaware of your surroundings and adjacent lanes.

I've been bowling with them for years, since MP3 players came out and I had to run the wires up through the shirt. Ever since the wrap around the neck style bluetooths have come out I have used those. I wear them because typically I bowl in leagues with jukeboxes allowed and the music is so awful or speakers blown that it annoys me. My earpieces only go in when I go up to the ball return for my shots, if I'm not up my music is off as I do enjoy socializing with others and I'm pretty much the one always catching issues with pins missing etc. to alert others even though i'm "not paying attention" as some would say.

I avg 224, have shot multiple 300's and 800's while wearing my headphones listening to my music. I use it as a method of preventing distractions.. I don't have to hear the obnoxious idiots on the team 1 pair over or the baby crying 5 lanes down or the random announcements that have nothing to do with me while I'm trying to focus. To me bowling is pure mental, I get messed with quite often because in my stance I hold the ball in front of my face so I don't even see the lane. I have been bowling long enough that it's all muscle memory, I try to zone out and not let anything deter me from my routine which really is nothing more then counting my steps 1-5 to keep myself in a smooth rhythm. You can mock it all you want, you can say it's not for good bowlers but how many said that about Belmo and 2 handed bowling at first?  Everyone is not going to conform to the same style/methods as everyone else.
