Just need to vent about my bowling.
« on: September 16, 2011, 06:49:52 AM »
Sorry for the longish post, and I am sure most don't care, but I need to get out my feelings about bowling. All my life I have been told I spin the ball and I shouldn't, blah blah blah. Sooooo, at the end of last season and the summer I worked strictly on staying up the back of the ball more and not "spinning" it. I figured out how to stay behind the ball and get up the back of it and now my scores on the THS have just dropped straight through the floor. And the worst part is, when I try to go back to the way I used to throw it, I just grab the S*&$ out of it and it just is not pretty. I can get to the pocket all night long, I just cannot get all 10 to fall. My best looks, which makes no sense for me, is taking my urethane hammer and basically pointing it at the head pin with a little tip on the backend and mixing the rack up. Every time I have a reactive in my hand I hit the pocket and leave a flat 10. Make a move, 4 pin. Make another move, 2 pin. And so forth.

It is just extremely frustrating right now, and I know I will figure it out, I have been in worse slumps. I am still shooting low 6's but that doesn't do me any good on the great wall of china. Spares me pretty much nothing. If you aren't striking 7+ times in the leagues I bowl in you aren't going to win your point regardless if you make your spares.

Just a frustrating situation I guess. Sorry for venting, and if any suggestions go ahead and read them. Thanks for reading.

Ryan, since you are working on staying behind the ball, perhaps your axis coordinates have changed substantially. Your old layouts may no longer work for you. Perhaps you should have your PAP measured again and equipment analyzed to see if it suits you anymore.

Ryan, best thing is to Find a good coach to help you out.  In Northern Il there are a few very good ones.

Bill Spigner Vernon Hills,  Brad Snell Mt Prospect,  Greg Zicha Fox Bowl Wheaton, &  Bill Monce IL

Spigner & Monce are both Gold Coaches But all are great coaches, I see you have  some money invested in  equipment. 1 or 2 lessons is still less than a new ball and is worth your time . Try a  real coach.

Good Luck

I think that is exactly what is going on. I was around 4 to 4 1/2 PAP before, and now I am 99% sure it is no where near that anymore. So I think my layouts just are not strong enough to make the corner or is too strong up front. Almost everything I have is either pin under the bridge or above the middle finger.

And I know the coaches you mentioned. I just don't have time to get out to them. I will be seeing my regular coach, my old high school coach who I still bowl with when I go home and in the summer, soon so hopefully get everything figured out then.

Along with staying up the back of the ball, cock your wrist (toward the pinkie finger, not toward the forearm) and uncock it quickly as you release the ball.  Think of the motion when you crack a whip.  That may get you enough extra revs to make the ball carry.  --  JohnP

RYM.....step back and evaluate a bit.  Your leaves when you are around the pocket will tell what to do.   Me personally, I finally figured out this "up the back" release   wasn't any good any more.  Not enough oil on a THS.   My ball was rolling out..    My solution was to let the "spin" back into my game.  The whole idea is to conserve energy for the "hit".  However you have to do it.  I'm watching all the 230+ young guys around here.   They are either spinning it or 90 degrees rotation.    Anything to conserve energy.

My problem right now is that after losing 90 pounds changing my approach from 9 to 4 steps I still go around my body and my arm swing is in the middle of my back. My coach has been telling me but I can't break the habit. Any suggestions?

Ill second Monce or Zicha. If you can make it to Fox, Mike Nape is great as well. I don't know how available Bill is, since I think he's now working as a rep for Ebonite. Good friend, good guy, great coach.
