Heavier/Flatter House Shots

Over the past several weeks, my usual house has been laying down a heavier volume, flatter house shot.  The proprietor has indicated this change is a response to the stronger, more aggressive bowling balls being introduced by the ball manufacturers.  The proprietor is concerned these balls are having a detrimental effect on the longevity of the lane surface itself.  Thus, the need for the heavier, flatter pattern.  Averages at the house over the past several weeks are down about 20 pins as a result.

Are other bowlers seeing this trend in their houses, or hearing similar comments from other proprietors?

No but I wish.

I dont see why making the pattern flatter will change anything except make it more of a necessity to be able to repeat shots

Flatter means more oil on the outside boards perhaps to protect the lane surface from the friction of the ball?

Personally, I would like to bowl on that type of condition.

It's funny how many bowlers SAY they want tougher conditions. And the folks posting here probably do, but the average bowler doesn't want them. They want cake, great wall of china, stand-left-throw-right(reverse for lefties of course), score off the chart even if you can't repeat a shot to save your life shot.

Bowlers prove it every time they are given a choice.

Yea, they will quit, at least most of them will. Or at least find another league for the next season.

my house actually started putting out house shots that are really flat and really long. Theres pretty much no friction on the outside and for the first few shots i guttered when normally it would easily come back. At first i thought this was a sports shot so I started playing it from way inside, not much hook, really direct, roll the ball ect. Its def tougher, but i like it a lot, you see the averages go down, but you see who can repeat shots and who can excel on something thats different and less forgiving. Also, theres some hold in the middle and the ball just skates at times when you miss it too much outside.

This happened years ago. I just returned to bowling after 15 years away, it was my 2nd fall league and during the meeting they put on the table using THS and a modified THS split into first half and second half. Something like that....anyway guys started falling off their chairs and hands in the air!!! 

In the parking lot after the meeting, guys were yelling MuthaF er this and that, "we pay our dues and to make blah blah blah".... at the time, I didn't fully understand why for the outcry....today I still don't understand the outcry lol

No, really, I do.  I have bowled in every sport league that was offered in the winter season (won't for summers, not here for half of it) and have enjoyed the challenge, no matter if I averaged 174 or 194. 

But, most of the sport leagues here have suffered from a lack of bowlers interested in bowling them.

Our center did that this year for all leagues.  Rotated between three different patterns every six weeks and then repeated so if your season was 36 wks, you saw each pattern again.  Only problem I saw with that was that each pattern was close to each other and there was not that much difference between them especially after the bowlers complained and the laneman 'tweaked' the patterns so they would be closer.  42', 40' and 39'.

There was no vote for that, we were just told that is what the patterns were going to be last season.

I think a lot of us here want to see tougher shots. But the average league bowler doesn't. Especially the "Big Fish in a little Pond" house hack that seems to exist in every Tuesday Mixers league. The ego just can't handle the hit their average would take.

I drive almost an hour each way to bowl a PBA league year round. There are two bowling alleys in my town and I pass right by three others to get to the house with that league. And there are at least 4 more houses that would be much closer, but none of them have a PBA league in the winter.

I love the center I bowl in. Great owner that runs sport leagues and other great events through the summer.

The regular house shot is pretty standard. Backends are a little strong and depending on the bowlers can break down pretty fast.

My only dissapointment is they just replaced all of the pins with new Twister pins.  First time I've bowled on them and they shouldn't be allowed. My average won't matter if it goes up because 0 pins handicap is always 0, but the lower average bowlers will easily go up 10 pins it appears.


You don't need more oil total in most cases as you need lower ratios to flatten it out. Doesn't mean you have to go to 3 to 1 but why not 6 to 1?

Have to please the masses.  Tougher shot, most bowlers unhappy. Leagues start to lose bowlers and then the center is either closed or have cosmic/glow bowling all of the time with an occasional company party.

I find it interesting that since it is heavier, it must be flatter as well.

Not necessarily.  old shot could be 3 units outside and 30 units inside and the bowler could notice and take advantage of the bump.

Hypothetically,  they could increase by a factor of ten and have 30 units on the outside and 300 units in the middle (I know they wouldn't do this in real life) and the bowler would think it is flatter when it's really the same ratio.  Since the ball will skid no matter what, it will appear flatter to the bowler.
