Heavy Oil and Dry
« on: May 03, 2007, 01:27:58 AM »
getting info for my uncle.  I've read tons of reviews so I have my own ideas but wanted to get a broader spectrum.  My uncle is a low rev lefty.  By low rev I'd say < 225.  Not much on the ball at all with around 16 mph speed at the pins.  Needless to say a ball that will move in heavy oil is a must.  That's what I'm trying to do is get opinions of what you all think would be better.

Also he wants a ball for dry lanes.  I havent gotten an idea of how dry yet.  I'm thinking something pretty week as he's wanting to replace I believe his AMF vp2.

Companies do not matter.  The driller he and I both used has closed up and gotten out of bowling period or else he'd ask him so I'm asking you all.  Just give me some ideas.

Thanks,
nick

I'd consider Visioary balls... for an oil shot, the Immortal solid. Grip and a killer differential to make the ball move desoite high speed/low revs on oily shots. For the dry, a Green/Blue Centaur could be the ticket - very low differential.

Is he expanding his arsenal or just looking for a new 1-2 combo?  If the former, then the Epic Battle or new Quest would work for the heavier oil, pair it with a Neptune for light oil.  That's a pretty big gap between them, though, so unless he's got other equipment he'll keep to go in there, I think he's going to have a tough time transitioning from the Battle to the Neptune.

If he's just looking for a 1-2 combo, I wouldn't worry too much about getting heavy and a light/dry balls but would look more towards medium-heavy and medium-m/light.  In that case, something like the Mystic and Horizon Pearl (maybe the Neptune) would have a smaller gap but still cover a wide range of conditions.  Or the two Hole Pounders if he's got the right sense of humor.  I hear you can get them at Nationals for $325 for the pair, drilled, inserts, and a 2-ball tote.  Or the two Thunderstrucks Solid and Pearl.

Heavy Oil --

Roto Grip Epic Odyssey

Light Oil --

Visionary Green/Blue Centaur or Roto Grip Neptune

A medium oil ball might be more useful to him though -- consider a Visionary Ogre (Solid version for more hook, Pearl version for a little less overall hook potential but a more angular backend reaction).  OOB, the Solid should handle a heavier medium.  Might give you a "one ball solution."

*EDIT* -- Anyone else notice how pretty much all the balls named thus far are Roto or Visionary?

He is just looking for a heavy and a light oil.  Probably the biggest hooking ball he has right now is a black widow so hes looking for something above that.  As for dry, as stated before he's looking for a replacement for his AMF VP2 which is quite a weak ball, especially for him.  Thanks for the help guys.  I'll pass this info along.  If others have ideas, please feel free to throw them out.

Nick

I noticed that so far all that has been mentioned was roto and visionary.  Maybe the guys that like the other companies are busy at work?  Another question, for heavy oil do you prefer particle or solid reactive?

Total NV drilled strong with the cover roughed to 2000 will move on pretty much anything.  Then, the Ice (blue or black) would be good for a medium-medium light-light.

I was thinking a total nv would be suggested.  Only thing is mine's drilled pretty strong yet even with the surface taken down this ball scooted on the chameleon pattern no matter where I played and I have  3x the hand he does.  I'll certainly mention it to him though.  Maybe take it down to say 800 or maybe 500 like the infinite?

I don't think this is a case of "other people being at work"...it just so happens that the two companies mentioned, Roto and Visionary, have some incredible stuff out right now, for a huge range of conditions and styles of play.  No disrespect to other companies -- I'm sure every company has a few good balls -- but you basically can't go wrong with either of those two.

Now that we know the Black Widow is his "medium" ball, I think I can make some more informed suggestions:

Heavy --

*Particle (for a true flood, when nothing else will move)

Roto Grip Epic Battle (note to Shelley, the Quest comes out in August, so that's a bit of a ways off still)

Visionary AMB Particle

*Reactive (for a heavy pattern that still has some dry boards, etc.)

Roto Grip Epic Odyssey

Light --

Roto Grip Neptune (for a more skid-flip look)

Visionary Green/Blue Centaur (for a smoother, controlled look)

Roto Grip Venus (stronger than the two above, but since the Black Widow -- a pretty strong ball -- is his "medium" ball, it might not be too hard to consider this a possible "dry" ball)

Hope this helps!

If he's looking for heavy and light then I would strongly suggest Roto Grip's Epic Battle for the heavy and for the light the Neptune. They won't set him back a fortune either and they last. Plus, you can play with their surfaces as well to add a further adjustment if needed.
