Explain this to me, please!?!?!
« on: August 17, 2004, 07:39:58 AM »
I understand the correlation between ball surface and ball reaction, but what I don't understand is cover preps using sanding then polishing.  For example, say you have a 1500-grit pearl that's going a little to long or getting a little funky at the break.  You take it down to 1000-grit to smooth it out a little and help it grab a little sooner -- cool, I got that.  But why would some then polish the ball that they just took down to 1000-grit?  Doesn't that essentially take it back toward the 1500 surface?  Or am I just confused as to what's going on?

Actually if you sand a ball down to a lower grit than repolish it...in theory the balls surface will have a little more grab than it did with its original surface.  Ofcourse it does matter which kind of polish / grit you are using as to the final severity of the effect.

So the polishing is an effort to get to say, an 1150-grit then?

Nollster,

They are actually taking it back to the 1500 grit, but by sanding it first, it takes off the original worn part of the cover.  Sanding essentially gets the ball down to a new, fresh part of the cover.  Then shining it back to where it was well theoretically make it like brand new again.

Then there is stuff like Black magic.  IF you sand a ball to say, 400, then apply black magic, it will have the length of a polish, but bite more than a ball at 1000 and polished.

Just thought I'd point that out.

This is the kind of thing I'm asking about.  How can it bite more if it's been polished?  You take the cover down in grit to make it bite more and polish it to give it length.  How does doing both not cancel each other out?  Maybe I need to get a cheapy ball to try it on my own...

1. A higher value finish produces a smoother surface. This surface produce more contact with the lane surface. Which means, it skids more in oil and moves more in dry.

2. Lowering the surface then has the opposite effect by providing room for the surface to bite through the oil and touch the lane surface in the oil (which can cause it to grab more through the oil) but becuase less surface in the dry it moves less on the back.

3. Polishing has the effect of producing more skid in the oil.

So, reducing the surface and then polishing would cause the ball to get more midlane roll (by allowing the surface to cut through the oil) but maintain more back end without polishing.

Nollster,

If you take your oob 1500 polished ball, and wet sanded it w/ 800 grit, then polished the ball.....the ball will be a little earlier, and not quite as strong on the back.  Your overall hook shape will be similar, but the ball will start earlier and be a little smoother because you have more 'surface' (800 vs. 1500) under the polish.....thus it's not storing quite so much energy...

Ahhhh....I think I see where my brain is shortcircuiting on this.  It's definitely making more sense to me now.  Kind of like trying to explain to me why birds don't get electrocuted standing on wires (yes, the non-insulated ones...).  My dad says the electricity picks the path of least resistance and I ask how do the electrons know that through the wire is the best path unless some of them try to go through the bird.......
