I am wanting to replace a well used virtual gravity as a go to heavy oil ball. I want a ball with similar reaction shape and continuous roll.
I haven't bought a ball in a couple years, only new ball in the last 2 years was a IQ tour that was a gift. great ball, wrong reaction shape for what I am looking for. actually a great compliment to the VG.
I am not really brand loyal, so willing to take suggestions.
THanks

VG was a great piece of equipment that even Storm had a hard time replicating for some reason. I saw a post where someone compared the new Paradox to the VG. Who knows.
-
Although it will probably only last 50 games, the Ebonite Pivot at 4000 sanded would be really close. It's something like 1500 out of the box, but with the lower grit sanding, it will have a very similar ball movement to the original VG.
And you can often find them on eBay for less than $100

Get an AMF Pure. Read the reviews. They all say it's a great heavy oil ball. You just have to be willing to exit the ball of the month club that is Storm.
-
thanks for the suggestions.
Skeptical on the pure because it is a symmetrical core.
The paradox is interesting; but it is a hybrid cover. never have had a hybrid for the heavy oil. may have to look hard that one.
-
Brunswick mastermind, the original one will be very close if not spot on.
-
Radical Guru Master. Broke the Bowlers Journal Hook Rating Scale recently. No ball hooks more in Oil.

I think you missed the original question.

Call me crazy the hyper cell solid is the closest thing to a virtual out there...
Mine has midlane and enough umph to flip on the dry.
I love mine.
I just punched up a 900 global dream big and soon a Roto Grip menace...I am willing to bet that either:
Hyper cell, dream big, or menace will do the trick!
-
Hey Billdozer, have you done anything with the cover of your Hyper Cell ? Mine is unusable on my house shot. I'm bowling on old wood lane that will soon be replaced by synthetic lanes. Maybe I'll be able to use the HC on the synthetic lanes in the near future.
-
DV8 Thug Unruly. Or even a Thug Corrupt @ 2k grit. The Corrupt will have a stronger motion off the spot. But the Unruly reminds me of the original VG

If you get brand new Anvilane surface you'll need every bit of that Hyper Cell.

I exclusively use mine on synthetics, the HC has been my top oil ball since it came out. I could care less that a guru hooks 5 boards. I know that nucleus is damn good, predictable, easy to drill.
I never use it on wood, our wood Lanes are so shot..usually a wrecker is the most ball you need.
-
HC would be/is a terrific oil ball. Agree with Billdozer, no use even trying to use on wood. Menace looks good but from all I've watched and have heard might be a bit under the HC still. Check out the ROTO/Storm You Tube stuff from bowl expo. Has a lot of good info about the new stuff.

I agree on the Hyper Cell for heavy -- you can't go wrong with this choice!
-
My pick would be the Dream Big, but the Hyper Cell is proven. In my opinion, the Mastermind, Paradox, and Menace are good choices as well.
-
Also the dream big has the nearly the same color scheme...pink instead of orange mixed with blue and black. Perhaps that trio if colors will help u see the ball read like your virtual...
When I opened mine and threw it, the first thing I thought of was the virtual
-
Mastermind is as close as I have seen.
-
Like the others have mentioned, a Dream Big, Hyper Cell and Mastermind are all good choices. The Hyper Cell and it's Nucleus Core are proven. Anything with the Nucleus Core is worth buying.
Even though the Motiv Jackal is a pearl, it's very similar to the others here. The benefit is it tends to be a bit cleaner and stores a bit more energy in back. Yet it has the same 57 BTM rating as the original Mastermind. That may be worth a look. I'd even say the Paradox is worth a look. That ball is probably the best ball that any brand at EBI has released since the original Mission.
-
thank you all for suggestions. I have read up on several balls.
After using BTM and this site it seems the Paradox and Menace are most similar to the VG. the Hyper cell is reported as an earlier roll. That and I am probably the only one on the planet that didn't like the original cell and haven't touched another cell since.
based on what I have read I am zeroing in on the Menace and the Paradox, and not forgetting the dream big. I have a friend with a similar grip that uses so many roto balls I wouldn't be surprised if he already has a menace or 2. I may get to throw one and see for myself.
Thank you all for the suggestions.

One of the problems with monster hookers has always been how quickly they lose their reaction. Funny you mention the original Cell. Great example. I thought it was the greatest ball I had ever seen for about 4 weeks. Same with the original Theory, and going back further the Infinite One from Ebonite. Didn't throw the Vivid but I heard similar stories on it. VG on the other hand actually was a better ball for me when it picked up some shine from the lane. Same with the Lucid.
Other Monster hookers are too condition specific right out of the box. Mastermind was not even real good for me on the Badger. Had better luck with Marvel Pearl.
-
thug corrupt excellent ball on oil lay out 50x5x40 with a p4 hole no problem getting to the hole
-
I have owned at least 5 Virtual Gravitys drilled every way you can imagine. I would definitely not classify them as "monster hookers."
Early continuos roll; but not monster hook.
-
One thing to consider is if you are trying to match an old VG or are you trying to add a heavy oil piece to your arsenal.
An old VG will generally be weaker than most heavy oil balls on the market right now and today's heavy oil balls are a bit stronger. To me, the Zero Gravity looked close but I never got one.
But if you are looking to add a heavy oil piece, then what everyone has stated stands.
-
Good point about the VG not being a monster hooker. Maybe that is part of the reason the shell held up pretty well. In any event it was the strongest ball I needed on any pattern.
-
Crux or Marvel-S if you can find one
-
Should have asked for a definition at the beginning of this thread. Did you mean long oil. My Black Widow Legend is still the best long oil ball I have. I bowled great with it on Badger, Paris and Scorpion. I used my new Paradox on Chameleon, and it was great the first week, decent the second, and didn't react well at all the third week.

The new Nirvana from Brunswick would be a great replacement for your Virtual Gravity. The ball has a brand new coverstock formulation that will keep performance longer with proper maintenance before having to do oil extraction. The New ESC coverstock is easily adjustable by putting royal compound or taking it up to 3000 or 4000. I have 2 different Nirvana's and they are usable on multiple oil conditions and neither of them start up early.
