Helicopter Style?
« on: November 15, 2011, 10:50:50 AM »
What ever happened to it? I remember it being talked about frequently awhile back, then it just kind of disappeared. Is it still used prominently in Asia? And why did it never really make the jump here?

Moosin' ain't easy!

the volume of oil is generally much lighter in Asia.... a ball that is spinning in oil will just slide down the lane

Seems to be based on the theory that if the ball is spinning when it hits, it could create more pin action.  The ball seems to be a straight delivery even on the Asian lanes.

Yes, it is a straight ball.  The spin of the light ball causes the ball to deflect and run down the 1-2-4-7 face of the rack sending pins all over the place.  I am not sure but it probably leaves way too many odd pin leaves to really catch on.  Last time I remember anybody talking about that was quite a long time ago, 80's.  Gimmick, just like two handed bowling.

I dont see how being a "helicopter" or "spinner" would, in any way, lend itself to much consistancy....

I don't know if I would call it a "gimick" or not a successful style.  The Korean women used the "helicopter" style to beat the US Team and take the gold medal in the 2009 World Championships.

I have actually only seen one true helicopter style player - and it actually was someone from Vietnam, living here in Germany and taking part in hobby tournaments at a local hose with some asian friends. Very impressive, because he knew his trade: ball would literally spin almost vertically, with a track diameter of perhaps 2". Ball would go almost straight and deplete its energy mostly upon contact with the pins, mixing them up. Left some weird splits, though, but seeing this in action was quiet interesting. Otherwise, I have never truly seen someone play that way. Some low trackers, yes, even on the extreme side, but not the "true" helicopter style.

I know a righty that gimmicked a 250 avg using 2 hands (over 87 games), about 60 300 games and he in his 20's.

NOT interested in THS adult bumper bowling scores.  Association and name of this wunderkind?  Admire him all you want, hell, change to his style if you love it.  I stand by what I said.  Look at the PBA.  Osku and Belmo dominating?  NO.  Think you need more revs or hand than Rash or Fagan to knock down pins?  I stand by my statement of it being a gimmick.

Not a problem. ID number: 1864-19817. Notice the 300 at USBC Open. Real deal.  Great bowler and a really nice young man too!  I stopped counting 11 800's in 5 or 6 different houses last season.

I don't think two handed bowling is a gimmick.

I think it is what those who aren't strong enough to go thumbless with one hand have to do. There is a guy here locally for many years that throws the ball a lot like Belmo with no thumb, and just one hand. You have to be very strong to do it, and he is. He is a great bowler. Has the average and scores to back it. Never seen him on truly drier conditions or sports shots, but have seen him in several different houses put up the numbers.

Those who are not that strong have to use two hands in order to support the ball and generate speed to bowl without a thumb.

As mentioned, speed and revs don't equal PBA titles. It takes a lot of skill and accuracy to go with it.(which all PBA bowlers have) My two favorites to watch bowl on any condition are WRW Jr and Norm Duke. The have the whole lane to work with, and many different angles.

"1 of 1."
…… you can't  add a physics term to a bowling term and expect it to mean something.

Holy carp, most years he bowled 6 nights a week.  Quite a few different houses as well - not just a one hit wonder.  Hope he doesn't burn him self out.  It's a shame that there doesn't seem to be any sport leagues near him.  Imagine how good he'd get if he bowled on them all the time!
