Scotch Brite pads.
« on: May 16, 2004, 08:03:08 PM »
Can someone here please give me a complete rundown on the color of the Scotch Brite pad and what it's equal would be for sandpaper.  I'd like to try resurfacing a ball with the pads, but am unsure of what to buy.  Thanks!

This question comes up a lot.  Charlest has the stats archived.  I'm sure he'll paste it in here.

Since charlest hasn't made the rounds to this post yet, I'll give you some numbers in case you're poised at the spinner ready to go.

Bear in mind that the grit level you get will depend partly on the pressure you apply, how well you keep the job lubricated with water, and how many times the pad has been used.  The pads can be reused, but they do get less coarse eventually.

The maroon pads are 320-400; the green pads are 500-600; and the light gray pads are 800-1000.  These are the three colors that are available almost everywhere--especially green.  There are other colors out there that are less commonly available.  Be careful about the gray--there is a darker gray that is quite coarse.

Hey McCracken,

If you want to buy quantity, try your local automotive shop/detailing or paint store.  They also sell some of these pads by the box and cheaper too.
