Help...bending over too far at foul line
« on: September 21, 2004, 06:01:30 AM »
For the last couple of weeks now, I feel like I am bending over too far at the foul line.  This has lead to either a weak dump to the right or an overturned pulled shot.  Obviously both results are bad.  My backswing is fairly high so I realize that is a contributing factor, but I am looking for keys to focus on when I feel this happening.  What are some tips to maintaining proper back tilt?  I'm a firm believer that most problems are not caused at the foul line, they start in the first step or two.  I'm just not sure what I'm doing to cause this much back bend.

I am fortunate to bowl in a league where Rick Steelsmith bowls when he is not touring.  I try to watch him whenever possible because I dream to pattern my game after his.  Last night, he was stroking it very well and now that I'm not so distracted with my own game, it hits me that his head and upper body remain very calm and steady throughout his approach.

THS.  I've been streaky to say the least and I think a lot of my problems are this bending over at the line.

ksucat -- Before beginning your approach, be sure your weight is back on your heels and flex your knees.  Then as you approach your slide, think of sitting down in a chair.  This advice originally came in an article a long time ago by George Pappas.  --  JohnP

Hey kuscat,

The only way I can bend at the waist too much is if I don't have enough knee bend at the line.  Being a little stiff legged at the line and then wanting to stay low to release the ball is usually where I see bowlers bending their upper body too much.  Try this, if you bend your knee right now, can you still bend your back over too much?  A good deep knee bend(ala Steelsmith) should allow you to keep your upper body more vertical for leverage and still feel low enough at the line w/o having to stoop over.  Hope this helps...

I moved up on the approach about 6 inches and focused on keeping my shoulders back.  This seemed to help quite a bit.  I know wonder if I had gradually crept back on the approach trying to combat some drier conditions and just went too far.  My balance wasn't very good, so I think I was stretching to reach the foul line and overextending my slide.  I'm not sure how I didn't bounce one off the approach because I do get a deep knee bend.

As stated, it is difficult to bend at the waste while having a deep knee bend.  You end up in a horribly unstable position.  That was me.

I'll try to integrate the image of sitting down in my approach.  That should be an easy key to focus on.
