help choosing a ball in oil
« on: April 27, 2008, 01:19:38 PM »
Howdy all...I'm looking for a ball that will finish in oil...my problem is however that I tend to have a suitcase release.  Not sure when I developed this, and I can't seem to change it.  It's definately working for me (average 210) however when I get onto really slick synthetic lanes I struggle because there is very little movement.  My friend told me that nothing will work for me because of this release...I'm hoping he's wrong.  Any suggestions????  Thanks.

Roto-Grip Cell drilled aggressive and maybe scuffed down to 600-grit if you need more reaction than what the out of box surface gives you. I don't care what your release is like, unless your throwing on the 50-foot World Championship oil pattern the Cell at 600-grit is going to move.

A ball drilled aggressive wont work for you beacuse of your release. You say you suitcase, or have a full roller release. This means that the best layouts for you are the ones geared for a full roller. When you come accros heavy oil, you will need anything with alot of surface. Something with say a 600 grit finish or lower will work fine. However there are some exotic layouts for full rollers. You may want to get ahold of some of them from Morich. I have one I am thinking of where it helps a full roller get some turn on the backend. I would explane it but I just cant remember the correct placements.

Is movement your problem or carry? Nothing will move on lonmg and deep oil, unless you play at 2mph and with forward roll.
If you carry well, do not bother about the overall hook, that more of an ego thing.
If ball performnace is an issue, besides a strong low RG core, also consider particle for early traction. Brunswick's Mammoth or Visionary's AMP Particle Centaur are IMHO good options here.

Get a Morich, they seem to gear their balls twords fluffers. LOL!!!!!!

Seriously, work on the release. This is FAR more important than a ball for oil. That pattern to you with that release, would probably be a medium pattern to alot of bolwers??????

movement is the problem...resulting in crappy carry.  I have to play way too straight...definately don't like it...especially when I start leaving crap because of the crappy carry...or sometimes it simply won't make it to the pocket...just keeps skidding and skidding.  Gotta love washouts.

Yes, it will likely be easier to manipulate your release with a lighter ball.  As far as a ball recommendation, try looking on e-Bay for a Columbia 300 Reaction Arc.  The coverstock is very adjustable and I've never had a ball turn better in the heaviest of oil.
