Too funny!

I join a mixed league (3 person) last night and to my surprise, my slumping average was 2nd high at 185!!!! Needless to say, the anchor on the opposing team had a 'posted' average of 161.  After looking at him throw the ball during warmups, I say to myself.... 'SELF, THAT 161 AVG. IS BULL!!!'  Sure enough, he throws dang near a 600 series against us!  Hold on, here's the best part.... after we finish bowling, we chatted and he's not only talking about how he shot his 8th 300 last week in another league, but also displays a ring plus 800 series ring along with how he averages 220 in the other 'competitive league'!

I just went up against one of those this week.  Funny stuff. Unfortunately, you can't control what cheap crap some other person tries to pull and just try your best to get up to the scratch level I guess.

Yeah, that's just wrong. True sandbaggers suck. One of the leagues I bowl on has a "10-Pin Drop Rule" so while your average may go down, your handicap can never go up by more than 10 pins from the time you entered. Sometimes it's fair, sometimes it's not, but it definitely keeps the sandbaggers at bay.

It stinks because my team has actually been bowling at or a bit above our average each week, but we can't overpower these people who bowl way above their average every week against us.  We have to just keep reminding ourselves that we didn't get into it to win money or anything...  After all, the original goal was to have something to do for fun and get better at bowling along the way.

Unfortunately, when you witness some of the cheap stuff people will do to win a little more prize money it is kind of pathetic.

Here's the thing though, doesn't it all kinda wash out in the end? I mean yeah, someone might sandbag at that moment, but eventually the scores average out. Isn't sandbagging something that is a short term problem? Eventually the overall scores catch up with them and balance out, don't they?

Not necessarily.  Some folks are amazing when it comes to "average management."

what also gets my 'goat' about my aforementioned situation, this league, though you win money and awards at season end, there aren't any 'brackets, pots, etc' going on!  What have you to gain by 'bagging'?

Some folks need a Check up from the neck up!

Not really, the better ones at the "practice" will bowl just well enough to win the games.  How often have you seen that 180 ave. bowler that you know his form is too good for him to have that ave. go out the door with 4 or five strikes to shoot a 220 to win a close game and then come back with a 160 to win another close game.  Think about it, they are out there.  Not saying it's true in all cases, but there are some...

Must be nice.  My "fun" "mixed" league has 28 teams of 5 bowlers.  Of the 163 roster members, 51 are carrying an average of 190 or better.

Also, this "fun" league voted to give first place team $4500 and the bottom 5 teams get $100 each ($20 per person).  League fees are $20 a week.

Hey, I'll never turn down free bowling.

This is why I tried to get our league to ban subs.  No one, IMO, should bowl and get to establish a National average for free (not counting the sanction card).

We never use subs on our teams.  Subs are not mentally or monetarily invested in the team or league.  You have no idea what they are going to do, if they are there to experiment with equipment or hand releases. ARe they practising some funky suggestion on their technique?   No thanks.

You have the wrong people subbing, then.  You should know and trust the people you ask to help your team.  If you don't, caveat emptor.  Besides, there's no guarantee that real teammates wouldn't do the same thing, especially "extra" teammates that are little more than subs anyway.

I wouldn't want to bowl with someone like that either, but in my experience, subs do commit to a team.  Someone with a reputation for not taking their job seriously, for abusing the trust extended to them as a temporary member of the team won't be subbing long.  That kind of problem is self-correcting.

Also in my experience, most subs bowl in other sanctioned leagues and hardly need their subbing to establish a national average.  While their sub average may happen to be the highest average they have (and thus becomes their "book" average), they hardly need it to have an average at all.
