Help filling a slot
« on: August 12, 2018, 02:51:43 PM »
Everyone, I need y’all help. I’m going to get a ball for my birthday in early September. I mostly bowl league but I do plan on doing the usbc and there’s an all navy bowling tournament coming up that I also plan on bowling in.

I currently have 3 balls, a no rules pearl (sanded to 1500), a dare devil trick(box finish) and a hyroad live (overseas version of the hyroad also at box finish).

I don’t have a lot of sports shot experience nor do I know what to expect.

Brand isn’t a deal breaker either. Obviously I currently have all storm/roto but my PSO can order all brands.

A little advice on where you see a gap, along with ball suggestions, would help me out a ton. I’m not trying to go top of the line, but that’s also not a deal breaker either if it is

Way too many variables here for a ball suggestion. If you can narrow it down to the spot in your bag you feel you're lacking and why, we can better suggest something.
Current Rotation:
PhysiX
Code X
Code Black
Axiom Pearl
Phaze III
Trend
IQ Tour

The problem is that I don’t know where I’d have a deficiency. I only bowl on house shot and it’s the hyroad all day on that.

I get there’s a few holes, just some simple suggestions. I was looking at a heavy oil possibility, I did have the turmoil in mind as a possible option.

But I do know there are other holes and was just looking for possible ideas to fill them

No two sport shots are the same.   Your style will dictate how you need to play the shot, then you might be able to determine if you need something else.

I Am a 70 year old stroker.  I carry a Marvel Pearl, hyroad nano, blue vibe, and a pitch blue.  My strength is I cAn play anywhere from straight up off the gutter to insude 4th arrow.  If I couldnt do that there wouldnt be enough balls in the pro shop to give me a look on some patterns.  If I am throwing the ball well thise 4 will cover a lot of patterns

Idol and Hustle Ink are the two Roto balls that stand out to me (cover above and below what you already got though Idol has some overlap with DDT).  +1 on the Marvel Pearl.  That ball is so good I tell people don't worry about overlap just get it.  No other pearl (I have thrown or seen) reads the mid lane like that ball.  Marvel won't be around much longer sadly.  If going to do sports patterns or tournaments easy to recommend a IQ Tour as well.

Yeah I totally understand sport shots are all different. I’m going in blind not knowing what any oil condition would be.

Also, I’ve comprised a list, albeit rather long. I’m not really sure if there is a lot of overlap. These are just some balls I have been looking at.

Black widow black/gold
Hustle ink
Hustle HYB
Hydra
Black widow gold
Hyroad pearl
Hyroad nano
Turmoil solid
Winner
Matchup black pearl
Honey badger
Venom shock pearl
Intel
Intel pearl
Tag cannon
Freestyle rush blue/red

IMO, if you don't need another ball for house shots, go IQ Tour/Intel/Venom Shock. They all take surface changes well, are easy to drill (go stronger and smoother for most bowlers), and are very predictable balls. A lot of balls you have in your list are made for house shots, transition on sport, or patterns with defined friction.  You don't need an oil monster necessarily to compete on most sport patterns. The Turmoil is a great choice as well for sport although it definitely requires a good amount of oil to be usable

My personal opinion is that you can get away with a simple 3 ball sequence and a plastic ball on almost anything but the extremes. Your ability to play different zones, change hand position, and modify surface will determine how wide “the extremes” are for you.

By a simple 3 balls sequence, I mean:
Ball 1: Fresh shot - very smooth and controlled ball with surface
Ball 2: transition begins to occur, and you’re moving left but no longer carrying with ball 1 - Ball with a little less surface that rolls heavy in the midlane but still pops
Ball 3: lanes transition to the point of getting walled up - Ball with even less surface, easier length, and more pop (aka, the house shot look)

The good news is that you’ve already got that sequence pretty well covered - start with your Trick, transition to the No Rules Pearl, and then ball down to the Hyroad when they get walled up. Building a sequence, IMO, gives me total confidence in making adjustments - the adjustments become consistent pattern to pattern unless the pattern plays to an extreme that forces you outside of your sequence and into the rest of your arsenal.

SO to answer your question - your gaps are simply filling in those pieces outside of your sequence. If your speed dominant, add an Idol to give you an option if the pattern is longer or very heavy.  If you’re rev dominant, add a Hustle Ink to give you an option if the pattern is shorter. If you cannot play up the boards to start, you’ll end up very deep by the end and need a true skid snap ball at the bottom. Etc.
