I always like the old school method for folks that want to find their PAP for themselves (without a shop's help):  Throw a ball, guestimate the spot based on the first oil ring, place a small piece of tape on this spot and keep moving it until the ball spins on the piece of tape off of your hand going down the lane.

Just easier for the "do it yourself" kind of person to pull off and it doesn't require a ruler, etc.

Whatever procedure you use, and there are several in the Unofficial FAW stickie, confirm it with the piece of tape.  --  JohnP

It's simple and accurate....

First go bowl a few games...

Do not clean the ball...

Bring  ball into a pro shop...

In  less then 1 minute they should be able to give you your track coordinates..Your PAP..

I have conflicting PAP coordinates from a couple of local pro shops.  For the longest times I thought my PAP was 4 7/8 and 5/8 up.  My first oil ring is about 2-2 1/2 inches left of my middle finger and thumb.  While bowling against a team that had a pro shop owner operator on it said the ball was buring up/rolling out.  The pin of the ball was along side the ring finger.  He said with my PAP that pin position was too close and might have caused the ball to roll out.  He said my pin should probably be over or under the middle finger to get some length and a stronger back end.

So going to a pro shop operator might not always be the best recommendation.

Barry,

Be very cautious about some professionals estimates. Mo himself measured my PAP as 2 3/4" over. That screwed up the drilling on a brand new ball, an expensive MoRich ball, too. He was so far off, it was pathetic. I guess he wasn't "up to snuff" that morning. My average PAP is in the 5" range as measured by myself and several other pros several times and confirmed by ball reaction MANy, many times.

Turned out he was much more interested in his phone calls to his distributor about how the sales of his balls were going than in the coaching he was supposed to be doing in seminars that day at the local center. That must have been such a drag for a person as important as he is ... err, was.

Thanks for the replies.  Thats why I was hoping I could find my own PAP by measuring.  The link Strider gave me was over my head and I don't really understand it.  I plugged two bowling balls and asked the person who suggested my PAP was wrong to drill two bowling balls for me.  So I hope to get them back today or tomorrow.

Thanks again,

Nic,  I think if you took a ball into 10 different shops, you would get 15 different readings....And it's not uncommon to have a different reading from ball to ball....

But I agree that 2 3/4 reading seems odd.....

What 2 balls are you having redrilled...

Bowl a few games with each and have the pap checked....

Nic,  what you just said here, to me has nothing to do with your track coordinates....

On the shot you were on, your ball was rolling too soon... The Pin to your pap was maybe 4"....  What I believe the shop owner said was,  for this drier shot, a pin should be farther away from your PAP,  Maybe 5 1/2, which might place the
pin over or under your fingers....

This has nothing to do with your track coordinates...

The ball with the pin next to the ring finger was just too strong, or rolled too early on that drier shot....Now all he told you was, that if you had a pin above or below, for that shot, it would work better...

Of course, if the next time you use that ball and the lanes have more oil, guess what,  it may go too long...And then he will tell you that you need a pin next to your ring finger....

So does this mean you will have him re drill the balls again.....

The ball and the drilling you had was probably fine...>>> For med-heavy oil... What it sounds like is that you needed a ball with a drilling for drier lanes..

You had a ball that was drilled stronger, pin about 4" to the pap...That drilling handles more mid lane oil... But if the lanes dry up,  you need a DRILLING on a ball that goes longer... Pin above fingers or 5 1/2'''''''' - 6" from your pap...

You can''''t always use the same ball on both shots...And it costly to keep re drilling them...

Stop worrying about your PAP....

I thought the link was pretty straight forward.  Sorry if it didn't help.  Basically throw a non or low flaring ball in the oil (don't worry about where the ball goes) with your normal release, trace the oil line closest to your grip, place the ball in an ash tray with the line parallel to the ash tray or table, and the very top of the ball should be your PAP.  Put a square or round piece of tape there and throw it.  Make small adjustments if the tape wobbles the first 10-15' of the lane.  It helps to get another bowler watch that part - the bowler might not really see the ball well until 15-20'.

Thanks for your help Strider.  The word "equidistant"  was too much for me.

jls,

Thank you for your feedback also.  The pro shop operator said with my low track (medium/low) that a strong pin for me would be over my middle finger and he wouldn''t be surprised if I didn''t need to have a ball or two with the pin left of the middle finger.

I still have about 150 bowling balls so i gave the pro shop operator a Virtual Energy and a Grand Illusion.

When Beans drilled a Supernova XP for me at Nationals a couple of years ago he put the pin above the middle finger and the ball hooked tremendously on the back end.

The pro shop operator said that if the pin was along side my ring finger that it was probably about 1 1/2 inches from my PAP.  So I agreed to let him plug and redrill the two bowling balls.  I hope to get them back tomorrow.

The first track (oil ring) closest to my middle finger and thumb is about 2 inches away.  I have a ball spinner.  So do I put the ball in the spinner cup where my oil ring is and then find the top with the spinner on slow speed?

Thanks for the help.

You can use the spinner, but don't necessarily have to turn it on.  You should be able to eye ball it very close.  If you really wanted to, you could turn it on and touch the ball with a grease pencil or contrasting crayon to mark the spot.
