Whats harder PBA pattern or open bowling shot
« on: November 22, 2008, 04:27:57 PM »
Hello all, I know we have all went to the lanes to get in some practice and the lane conditions are horrid. Allot of open bowling, previous league, and haven't been re oiled. The lanes are spotty, have carry down, just overall erratic at best. My question is this what is harder to play on, a freshly laid PBA shot or a weeknd leftover house shot? Personally I like bowling on this kind of stuff because you really have to focus and it usually gives you allot of spare shooting practice. What do you think?

Depends on the PBA pattern and the house pattern. As of today, I average higher on Viper than I do even a fresh house shot, much less an old one. But I barely average 150 on Cheetah.

If you'd bowled where I did from 1991-1996 and again from 1999-2001 (Leland Lanes, Tuscaloosa, Ala.), you'd say house shot was harder, too. That's because Leland used to put down a flat-earth, 12-units-across-all-boards shot and the all-men's average there was 30-plus pins lower than at the house across town.

Because "house pattern" can mean anything from automatic strikes down to a pattern put down by someone who either doesn't know or doesn't care how to lay one, it's hard to say. Once you break down a PBA pattern far enough, and once you break down a house pattern far enough, you pretty much clear all the oil out of the preferred track area and then they're equal.

On average, the PBA patterns will still be tougher. But it's not universal and in my personal experience, all the PBA patterns except Cheetah are far easier than a flat sport shot.

I can't say for sure which one is harder, although I want to say the super dry + carrydown house shot.  That's because I struggle on dry lanes that dry, not sure if it's because I might be forced to play deep(something very rare for me to do) or simply because of how early the bal starts moving.  I will say that I much prefer a PBA pattern because those are actual shots and because I'm much more likely to play a lot straighter.

broken down dirty carrydown for sure...no fresh pba pattern will have the ball reading before the arrows unless you're playing the pattern tremendously wrong...plus...imo...pba patterns allow us no-handers to thrive in our element of speed and accuracy control...my nose starts to bleed getting into 18 at the arrows!

BROKEN UP AND CARRIED DOWN AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Anytime is more difficult than a PBA Pattern at least the PBA Pattern will read consistently the THS will not ugh Imagine bowling a tourney on used THS from the night before, the cut would -50

Depends on the PBA pattern or the house shot, I have a LOT of hand (2 handed), so basically I can make a ball hook on anything, Shark, Scorpion and Viper, sometimes Chameleon depending on lane surface for me would be easier, cheetah is another story, even though the new one seems like its going to be a tad easier for people like me. Those messy house shots can get ugly, but usually just  have to move wayy inside (around 25 -15 line) and no one will have played in there and should be fresher.

bone .. I mean bone dry heads.. If the USBC wants to keep scores low all they have to do is just put 0 oil the first 20 feet.  Ball hooks up immediately off your hand and then goes dead straight the rest of the way down the lane. Polished urethane and plastic.. same result

Couple this with flooded down the lane outside 7 and it makes for a pretty tough shot.

That seems like the big controversy with bowling ... that bowlers can just buy hook in a box and anyone can shoot big scores now.  That a 200 average doesn't mean much now a days.

It would depend on what type of conditions your game has evolved.

Really versatile bowlers can score high on a freshly laid PBA shot as well as on a weekend leftover house shot.

Both can be easy if you know what you are doing.  Easy is relative.  I can make the PBA shot easy and get 200's but that ain't gonna cut it in an actual PBA tournament when everyone else is averaging over 230.

PBA: consistent shot, we knew what they were (like Chicago Bears coach LOL)
THS: can be taken advantage of if you know what you are doing, but don't be surprised if the ball hooks off breakpoint inconsistently time to time.

It all depends but I've never bowled on a PBA pattern after hundereds of games. Open house shot of course should be easy but I've bowled on some late shift open play or league shots that are tough.

I really think stripping the lane is the key, which is why the PBA has a minor advantage over bowlers in the PBA experince. Have a house shot and the lane maintenance guy doesn't strip for weeks and it can be very difficult.
