help me help a friend
« on: March 31, 2004, 04:00:16 PM »
Ok I have a friend who wants to learn to throw a hook. Right now he throws an old polyester, convetional drill ball I gave him. He threw my monster bruiser a few games and got his high score with it so now he wants to get one, but even with that ball he throws it straight, because he tries to hard to hook he, he just puts top spin on the ball. I think he is so interested in the the fact its reactive that he thinks its hooking. I tried to teach him to do it "the right way" so that he's at least not spinning it, but my teachings arnt very useful. I mean even if he was a spinner with like really slow speed would be one thing, I know a few of them who do perfectly fine, but he throws like 17-19 mph. He is looking to buy a Monster Bruiser and I dont think he understands that its a waste of money until he learns.

15 years and still going strong! 15 years old that is! The names Warrior Princess, Xena..Warrior Princess
AM not A CHICK OF BOWLING but I wanted to be in Manda's clique And why would I "saw" pins in half, THATS A WASTE OF PINS! I'd rather blow it over with my storm, and 21mph ball speed on dry shots.

getting a ball that fits is the first step to learning how to bowl correctly. Maybe his driller/pro shop can help him with his new ball. My shops always try and go to lanes with beginners and new ball buyers, to check fit and help with release and getting the feel of a new ball.

First, make sure he gets a properly fitted ball.

Second, make sure he gets a mini Nerf football to practice throwing underhand.  It's an inexpensive way to learn the basics of the hook shot
