Interesting rules question
« on: March 25, 2004, 07:54:26 PM »
A bowler throws a split (6-7-10). By the time he turns and walks to the ball return the 7 pin is gone. No one knows whether it not it was knocked down legally or knocked down by the pinsetter. The bowler proceeds to pick up the 6-10 spare. His team wins by 5 pins. After the game is over a bowler from an adjacent lane says to a bowler on the losing team, "You would have won if they had reset the 7 pin on that split, the pinsetter dropped it." After much discussion and debate it was determined that the bowler would have to shoot at the split. He did, he missed, and the results of his score and the game were altered. Was the right decision made? If not, what should be done now?

My belief is the game should have remained as bowled.
You can not change history, the rebowling of the frame
after the game was completed, was incorrect.

You really should check the rules, but I think once the spare is shot, that's it. The record is complete and locked. You can't or shouldn't go back and re-bowl any frame in a completed game. The decision must be made, I believe, at that moment in time.

I'm with Charles on this one...if the team captains agreed to shoot it as it stood, I believe that is the end of discussion.  However, I have not pulled out the rule book to confirm that...

Unless ABC ruled that it must be reshot, or, the opposing team protested right then and there at the time it happened, the score stands. period unless all parties agree. Which is sounds like that is what happened.

I've gone to bowl.com and submitted the question to the ABC.  I agree with all of you but I want a ruling or a quote of a rule before I raise the issue with the league. I've been bowling for 30 years and have never heard of going back after a game is over for a "do over".

the only time i have ever seen a "do over" is when someone goes on the wrong lane, or there isnt a full rack when the first ball is thrown.  once a legal frame is finished, it goes in the books and thats it.  i cant believe that happened...i think the abc will have the same ruling.

The score should have stood and never been changed.  However, if the guy on the next lane saw the pinnsetter drop the pin, he should have said something at the time, especially since there was a discussion about it.

For whatever reason the guy on the next lane didn't say anything until after the game was over.  I agree with those of you who stated that it shouldn't be changed/rebowled after the game was over. I have sent it in to the ABC for a ruling, I'll post it when I get it.
