No Inserts question
« on: March 31, 2007, 02:30:52 AM »
I'm thinking of going no inserts. Anybody have any problems with sweaty fingers? Do you any problems staying in the ball or not coming out smoothly?

I have a problem with blood under my middle finger nail, and I've tried just about everything, shorter span, more reverse, vacu grips, etc.

I'm thinking inserts might be the cause of it...

I cant see how inserts would cause blood under the nail.  Inserts would somewhat equalise the pressure between the fingers.  Taking them out won't makes things better, but possibly worse imo.

I use no grips and love it (but i started w/ no grips... tried grips and didn't like them 2 much)... not sure what it will do for your finger but your ball speed will go up a bit (you get out cleaner) and you may notice that the number of times u miss your mark will go down (at all my friends that have switched to no grips have noticed this).  You also get 2 stop worrying about balls cracking around the fingers.

I dont know, I believe it is to each his own.  I went away from inserts due to feel and have had no problems with my fingers at all.  I would take an old ball if you have one and plug the fingers and try it out.  Go to your pro shop and let him know what is going on with your finger as well and have him check out your pitches and finger flexibility...

I really like the idea of a cleaner release, even though I already have one (not to sound stuck up or anything).

I was using the oval side of the grip for awhile and the bleeding 'almost' went away completely, then it came back. Then I switched back to using the pitched side of the insert with more reverse and it 'almost' went away, and yet again came back.

I'm running out of options and fingers...lol

jjweb -- How stiff are your finger joints and how much reverse pitch have you tried?  As a rough check, put your fingers (only) in the ball and place the pads of the fingers fully in contact with the front of the hole.  Now put your thumb in its hole.  If the pads of your fingers pulled away from the front of the hole you most likely need more reverse pitch.  --  JohnP

I decided to go ahead and try going without inserts. We added more reverse and left lateral for my middle, no change for my ring.

I haven't thrown it yet, but the fit feels pretty good.

ive had plenty of expierence of blood from fingers. especially under the finger nail...im a nail biter and after a few games i start to dig into the ball and it pulls back your nail and blood can start going everywhere...also could be a pitch problem

They're still talking about a fingertip fit, but with drilled holes for the fingers instead of the rubber grip inserts.  To convert to a conventional grip you would have to plug at least the finger holes and redrill.  --  JOhnP

So far so good without using inserts. No middle finger pain, slight irritation from the extra friction, but only because I've never gone without inserts.

Only thing I did notice was a little bit of swelling/stiffness in the ring after bowling (bowled like 10-15 games), but I have a feeling I need a little more bevel there.

One thing I could not do was pull shots, I just couldn't do it. Didn't mean I didn't miss to the right some shots, just couldn't pull it in of target.

I did this on my Toxic, was lefty now righty (just plugged the finger and re-slugged the thumb) and my first pin under drilling too. Pin is about an inch down and next to the ring. Great ball roll!
