Adjustment
« on: December 30, 2004, 07:52:48 AM »
Here is a question to think about. This is for the best minds of fellows bowlers on Ballreviews and no idiots need to answer. If you were bowling and along way you should a make a adjustment but did'nt? How about making a adjustment and wish that you should not have done it in the first place? What I'm talking about is ball, hands, feet or speed. One of mine is at times not having the right bowling ball for that nite.
I hate ten pins but love the game of bowling with just the right ball to take them out.

Well, if I have the ball with me, and don't change, shame on me. If the ball is at home in the magic closet, too bad. I gotta make do with what I got.

As far as adjustments go, if I make one, and get an unexpected result, I can either move back, or keep adjusting. I have choices. Sometimes the adjustment can be more costly - sometimes it's a little less trouble than I would have been in otherwise.

For example - the ball is starting to dive into the pocket, hitting high flush. I just tripped a 4 pin. In this house, once the lanes start to go, it's a race to see who can move fastest. So I move 3 boards left with my feet, and probably the same with my target. Oops - I left a bucket. Well, much better than the 4-9 or worse that I would have left if I'd stayed where I was - and I can always move back one right to get to the pocket.

The question should be like this. If you were bowling and along the way you should of make a adjustment but didn't? What I'm refering to is moving your feet, changing balls, your hand position underneath or to the side and speed of the ball. DukeHarding this is what I'm refering to and take a look at mumzie's post. And you can see what I'm getting at.

Should have and did'nt?

Like Mumzie I tend to adjust too early and too much.(over adjust)
Too early I can always go back.
Too much is my choice for initial adjustment. I figure I'll only have to make 2 adjustments instead of many minor ones.

I try never to change my speed or hand position as long as
I have another piece of equipment that will allow me to adjust
to the shot necessary. I will move laterally with my feet.
If the lanes are really dry I do open up my wrist, but this
only happens in non league situations.

Coming from an era when 2 and 1's where feet adjustments, and release changes to avoid moving at all... today it is hard for me to know when and what the proper move is. 5 an 2's, 3 and 3's and now throw in all the choices with layouts and ball construction charateristics and it is honestly a hypothisys at best. Even the best bowlers in the world make wrong choices daily. But then when you get it right you score enough to make up for the time you were lost. And if you dont get lost, your in the top.

My problem is that I either dont adjust, because I think I just threw a bad ball, or I adjust way too much, because I threw a bad ball, but didnt think it was a bad one. In other words, say I throw a ball that goes through the nose, but I dont realize I pulled it a little bit, I'll end up moving 4-5 boards left and going really light the next shot with a good ball. I also sometimes tend to switch back and forth between balls, because one game one ball will work, then I switch for the next game, then go back to my first ball for the 3rd game. I get confused sometimes haha.
