Help out a college-bound senior
« on: November 18, 2008, 04:28:39 PM »
I'm looking for a college to attend...The criteria are:

1. in the USA
2. Decent engineering/math/science programs
3. top 20(ish...I'll make exceptions if there's a good reason you can back up) bowling team
4. semi-cheap...under about 25,000 a year, but flexible here too.
5. I'd like a good location where I can bowl daily in competitive leagues, cheap practice, sport shots often, and tournaments within 2 hours as often as possible, even if small clubs.

Here are some colleges I'm seriously considering:

Purdue University - Indiana
Michigan State University - Michigan
Pennsylvania State University - Pennsylvania
Arizona State - Arizona
Rochester Institute of Technology - New York
Florida State University - Florida
Lehigh University - Pennsylvania

If anyone has any reason to or not to attend these, or has anything to add to the list, I'd really appreciate it! This is your chance to plug your college/city/bowling program, so hit it up!

power rankings are at www.collegebowling.com, I believe.

Also, getting into the school isn't a problem. I'm 4.1 GPA, 1950 SATs.

I'm not sure but I here University of Minnesota is bringing back bowling. They also have one of the best engineering programs in the nation. Also, iff you are still bowling youth we have the MJBT which is a highly competetive monthly tour. There are also an incredible amount of leagues at every house every day of the week. All you have to do is be able to stomach the cold -)

I'm definately gonna have to disagree.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Rochester area.  It is no worse than any city in the US, including New York City.  My fiances family is from that area, and I have been into Rochester several times with them....nothing wrong there.  If you were looking at going to college in Buffalo, it might be a different tune.

RIT is a great school...my cousin graduated from there as did several friends from HS.  Great technology and engineering programs and from what you've said, a good bowling team.  The Rochester/Buffalo area is into bowling in a BIG way, as you can tell from the amount of people on Tour from that area of NYS.

Power rankings can be misleading.  Generally about all you mentioned except for maybe Lehigh and PSU-Main are in the top 20 area about every year.  Of course if you were bowling only then you'd go more towards Wichita State, Saginaw Valley, Lindenwood, Central Florida, etc.  I'm not sure if any of those even have engineering.

Ranking wise I'd wait to see where USBC Collegiate has everyone ranked when their 1st comes out probably later this year.  Currently we are 10th and we have a pretty strong engineering school as well.

Only thing wrong with Rochester is you have to deal with 5 feet of lake effect snow just about once a month in the winter, which runs from Sept to May...lol

The RIT bowling program is very good, as they usually do really well in all their tournaments, and have a good engineering program.

NC State - same goes for them, good bowling, and good engineering.

St. John's - I will be transferring there in the spring. They do have a good bowling team usually, but I'm not too sure how their engineering program is.

Schools with good bowling are what people have said - Wichita, Lindenwood, Saginaw, UCF, schools like that. College should be about your education, and bowling should just be something extra. If you can find a school with both, that's great! But don't turn down a great engineering program because of bowling.

dude RIT!!!!!! i just graduated from athena HS in rochester. and we know how to coach bowling. if you have ever heard of jon buckert, britni hamilton, kim youlos(sp), dan vick, john szcerbinski, heather d'errico. they all came from rochester. one of the best engineering programs, kids who can average 200 on sport, brad buckert is one of the best ball drillers in the state at begin'rs to pros pro shop. that team will be great for years to come.
clover lanes has multiple sport leagues for adult and youth. YBTs travel around western new york to bowl tournaments on PBA shots. they also do junior gold qualifiers every other sunday.
the only remotely bad thing about rochester is the snow. we have like 7" now but it will be gone in a couple of days. we will get like 20" in december but will all be gone by christmas. january is usually a mild month in the 50s but febuary and march bring on the snow. then april usually gets back into the low 50s. its tolerable, i dont think its as bad as people make it out to be.
PM me or something if you want to know more but i check this place daily

the place i go to is sacred heart university in connecticut. we are 24th in the country right now. we have a lot of talented freshman this year and we will be a force in the years to come. i think it is more of a health and science school and computer science school but it is awesome. it is a little expensive (40000) but they can usually take it down to like 23000

RIT!!! Great school academically, currently ranked #4 nationally in men's bowling, and the rochester area has outstanding scratch tournaments nearly saturday & sunday. Plus there's much more to do in Rochester than outsiders realize. I live in the area and bowl against the RIT guys in a PBA experience league, and they're great. I also know and have worked with RIT's coach Chris Lamb, and he's absolutely awesome - will bend over backwards to help you out.

Well, RIT is a completely dry campus to the point where if you get caught with any amount of alcohol they can and will expell you.  Don't know if this would be a problem for you, but just letting you know.

Wichita State does have a good engineering program as well as one of if not the best coaching staffs in the world.  WSU is a who's who of bowling.  Seriously good academics, reasonable pricing, Great bowling, not a dry campus, and doesn't get 5 feet of snow.

THE Ohio State University.

Columbus is the best college city in the Midwest, hands down.
