Bowling Groupies
« on: June 24, 2004, 09:28:39 PM »
There's this one guy that visits the lanes I bowl in.  He's not in any leagues there, but everyone knows him.  Here's the thing, I've noticed that this guy only speaks to guys that he feels are good bowlers.  He gets really excited when the high rollers walk in and he's all teeth.  Now, the bowlers with lower averages he does'nt communicate with, I've seen these guys try and converse with this guy and he somewhat brushes them off.  After seeing this, I don't really speak to this guy. I'm not a low average bowler so we have spoken in the past and he still tries and say things to me when I come off the lanes.  I speak when he speaks and that's it.  I've also seen him bowl and it's nothing to write home about.  I just don't think its right that this guy only feels that he should deal with certain level bowlers.  I'm not saying run around the center skipping and throw candy in the air, but there's nothing wrong with speaking to people who may not be on a certain skill level, especially when his level is not that high either. I just had to vent!! Any bowling groupies in your area?

Funny you should bring this up about now. My hubby has started commenting on my "groupies" - the folks who, when they see me at tournaments and stuff, do what they can to hang around me. I have noticed it, but haven't really paid much attention to it until recently. I find it kinda embarrassing, but hubby says I should be flattered.

There is one local bowler who recently has moved from juniors to adult. He is a good example of what you are referring to. One time I was talking with him (as I do ANY of the kids that want to talk bowling), and another youngster came up to say hi to me. This guy told the other kid to bug off - he started talking to me first. Needless to say, I corrected him.

When the scratch level ladies turn out, there are a few of the "older" gents that usually show up as well. They definitely like associating with the higher level bowlers, but are generally friendly to all.

Some people just feel that it truly isn't what you know - it's who you know.

This type of guy doesn’t bother me much. They are the ones losing out not the ones he ignores. And there will always be admirers of top performers.

The guy that drives me nuts is the one who only comes and talks to you after he has shot a big score. “Hey Pinbuster how you been shooting?”, I might say  â€œOh ok I….”, he butts in “ Well I shot 689 the other night using my big blaster 300 ball, I was threading a needle, blah, blah, blah, “.

You get the picture.

By the way MEDIOCRE is my middle name.

Yeah, Pinbuster - we got one of those too. He'll hang around for a full hour after the early league finishes just to talk to the late league bowlers about how he did earlier.
GRRRR.....
